I've been noticing the smell of petrol intermittently in my FZJ105.
The other night, after a highway drive and then I was sitting still for about 10 minutes stationary with the engine running, when I again smelt it very strongly.
I hopped out and had a look under the car and saw a puddle.
I reversed back away from it, checked it - petrol, and then popped the bonnet.
At the back of the fuel rail, right near the firewall, there is a fuel pressure pulsation damper, and there was a LOT of petrol leaking out of it!
It must be intermittent though, as when I checked later, with the engine up to temp, and it didn't appear to be leaking at all, and there was no smell.
I've just received a genuine replacement for it and will fit it today.
The part for the FZJ105 is 23207-46010. An alternative part number is 23207-20011, which is the one I found on Ebay.com.au.
Price was $119 AUD inc. express shipping.
I could of got it cheaper overseas from Partsouq, for example, but I didn't want to wait.
The local Toyota Co-op wanted $180ish with a weeks shipping.
I realise you must have the 2UZ-Fe engine, being a petrol 100 series, but they also have a fuel damper at the back of the fuel rail, so it could be worth checking that.
The damper part number for a UZJ100R is 23270-50010, with alternatives 23270-50012, 23270-73010 and 23270-50011.
The gasket part number is 2323241081.
There is also a metal gasket which is 90430-12026, (alternative 90430-T0003).
It only takes a spanner to get it out.
DO NOT TOUCH the phillips head screw under the plastic cover thingy - its not meant to be adjusted.
This is obviously a serious fire hazard, hence why I thought I'd post this information.
While it might just need tightening, the intermittent-ness of it means I would never be completely sure its sealed, without replacing it, and, given its over 20 years old, is probably due for a change.
Hope this helps.
EDITED: Installed new fuel damper - It was so hard to get out it certainly wasn't loose.
Its a bit awkward to get to it. I found using a 22mm open crow foot socket the easiest method to get it.
And be careful not to lose either of the TWO washer/gasket things - one between the fuel rail and the fuel inlet line, and the other between the inlet line and the damper.
No more leaks or smells of raw petrol.
