So sometimes when I accelerate the truck sputters like I'm running out of gas and once in a while it will take a while for it to start. I have already replaced the fuel filter so i think it's the pump. My questions are what is a decent alternative to the denso pump since it's unavailable?

I also saw a guy retrofit a 5vz pump denso. Have any of you done that? My main concern is it is safe? I don't want to catch the thing on fire . Here is his video

I've considered making the conversion to a different pump with a connector. I would run that setup without hesitation. Just make sure your splices are solid, soldered, and shrink tubed. I've been trying to source the connector without trying to harvest from a boneyard tank.

Like pappy said, it will not be a problem. "Mainly" a different connector. I think the flow is a bit higher in the 3.4. I ran my 88 pump when I swapped in a 3.4. I saw they no longer made it so now I'm running the 3.4 pump.

I recently picked up a new fuel pump off of RockAuto for my 88 4Runner. They had a unit by Carter and while not the cheapest, it also wasn't the most expensive. Once I received it and compared it to what was installed, It wasn't anything like the one previously installed or videos/pictures seen online. It was half the diameter and about two inches shorter. However, in the box there was note that it was an updated unit and was designed to work with this setup. The kit came with everything I needed to mount it in the pump carrier including a new filter/strainer. No issues installing it, but I'm only around 300ish miles since installing it, so to soon to say anything positive about longevity.

Interesting. I was at the boneyard this morning and looked at the tank on a 1992 truck. The pump was as you described, tiny. I thought that was odd.

Follow up. The connector to install a Tacoma 3.4 pump is 23237-0C010. About $25 list. Note this pump is the same for the 2.4 and the 2.7, Tacoma and 4R. It will require removing a plug off the pigtail and splicing to the bracket wires.

@pappy, Thanks for the follow up and posting the info. When I was looking at pump options a while back, I looked at all the pumps listed on Rock Auto. I also saw that the pumps listed were the same for both the 2.7 and 3.4 so just for the heck of it I looked at the 22RE pumps. Different part numbers but basically the same as far as pressure and flow.

Most of them that offered specs showed 44 PSI system pressures, Average flow of 26 GPM and average current draw of 6 amps. These seem to be a good guideline for pump size selection at least.

I have to say though, that the Denso pumps sure run quiet compared to some other brands that I've tried.

I’m glad to know about the 3.4 fuel pump connector because I may replace the Walbro pump I’ve got due to noise with one of those pumps.

Another little fuel pump connector update. 90980-11080 appears to be just the pigtail we need. I will order when I get home to confirm. It's only about $11 list, $8 with my discount.

Note I'm not sure if this is a pigtail, or just the connector housing.
