This is also posted in the 40 section, but I thought some of you guys have probably delt with similar issues. Thanks for reading

I have a '65FJ45LV with a SD-40 carb. My problem is that the wagon dies while driving at any speed. I can drive for a block or two and then she sputters and dies. I can start her again get a couple more feet then sputters till the engine shuts off. This goes on until I can limp back into the driveway. Idles just fine. I can watch the fuel level go up and down while at idle.

Here is what I have done to unsuccessfully solve my problem.

1. Tank had crap in it. So I replaced fuel filter.
2. Had tank boiled at radiator shop, but they didn't to that special coating on the inside.
3. Blown forced air through every line/hose/tubing between tank and carb.
4. Pulled apart carb, fuel pump and cleaned with carb cleaner and forced air.
5. Plenty of new gas.

I still see very tiny amount of crap in the fuel filter, but nothing compared to what was there before I had it boiled.

What else could this be?
Do fuel pumps work sometimes and not at others?
Is having the tank lined a must do?

I have searched and searched and done everything that people have recommended before. Still having issues.

Any help is greatly appreciated. I can post pics for those with special requests.

Thanks,

Dave

With metal fuel lines, it may be a pain, but you can install a fuel pressure gauge near the carb and watch line pressure as it runs, as you rev it up, and as you drive - should be 3-5 PSI or so and shouldn't go to zero when you rev it up. Rig this carefully and don't put the gauge inside the truck - tape it to the hood to watch as you drive. Some vacuum gauges also have a fuel pressure function - so you can buy a combo gauge.

You said: "Idles just fine. I can watch the fuel level go up and down while at idle."

If you can watch the level change in the carb (thru the glass window) as the truck is idling, you have a problem for sure.

You may want to rebuild the carb (per the directions) rather than just pull the lid off and blow out various passages. I'd do that (blow out the lines) first myself, but when things get weird, the only real solution is a more complete disassembly. All this assumes you don't have a fuel pump or delivery problem prior to the carb.

Thanks Steve,

I have been encouraged to replace the fuel line that runs from the tank to the fuel pump.

After that, if I still have issues, I'll work with a fuel pressure gauge.

Thanks again,

Dave

Hi Dave,

I assume that you are still driving my LV. I am curious where all the stuff in the tank came from. Back when I had the truck, before I ever got it running again, I took the tank off and had it cleaned. I didn't have it lined or anything either, as it was really clean inside. I just painted the outside with Zero Rust to help keep it protected and re-installed.
I never did anything to the lines though. Could it be that stuff is, "backwashing" from the lines into the tank? If so, replacing the lines would correct it (I would think). Otherwise, I don't have a clue, it always ran & Idled really smooth when I had it.

HOpe this helps...

Best,
Abe

P.S. Any new Pics or the truck? Also, how big is your pup now?

Nice to hear from you Abe,

Pup is about 30lbs now and more crazy than I could have ever imagined.

I have driven this wagon daily since March and haven't had any problems. This is the biggest issue I have yet to deal with on this vehicle.

Anyways, I replaced the lines running from the tank to the filter and from the gas filter to the fuel pump.

Still having the same problems. My next move will be to replace the fuel pump. However I am not 100% that the pump is my problem. Especially since the pump is only about 3-4 months old. Granite this is not a Toyota pump.

Please, anybody with half an idea speak up.

Thanks,

Dave

I believe that I have fixed my problem.

I replaced the fuel pump. Nice cause I was under waranty from the last fuel pump i purchased from Schucks.

Anyways, pictured below is what I beleive to be my problem. This is a filter that sat right in front of the carb. I am able to blow air through it, but for some reason this thing is limiting the amount of gas that goes into the carb.

Thanks for everyones help.

Glad to hear you got that figured out Dave, I was about to call and ask you about it. By the way, was there any junk clogging that filter you show?

Carlos,

Actually, I have the gas tank out and over at Max's radiator right now. Still had some issues after I posted that pic. So, i hooked up the red plastic gas tank and been driving around town without any issues. The guys over at Max's are going to cut the tank open and bead blast the inside. Very happy to finally have this issue almost fixed.

Talk to ya later

cool, and I was thinking you had an oem filter.
