Hi folks,

I went and did a little wheeling this past weekend, and while going over some ruts downhill (slowly, but fairly deep), I slid down the hill a bit into a rut, and the truck came down a little hard (dirt, not rocks). I heard a popping noise like metal on metal when it happened. Got off the hill fine, drove home, but noticed that when turning left or right, slowly, like into a driveway, with a slight incline, I hear a similar pop. I'm about 80% sure it's coming from the front of the truck, not sure about driver/passenger side.

So I spent some time crawling around under it, making sure things were tight, etc. as one does. I noticed that the front sway bar bushings (see pic) have two fasteners (duh). However, one is going what I think is the wrong way, and there is no nut. To me, this seems like it could be the source of my problem, however, these sway bar bushings were replaced by a shop about a year ago (normally I do the work myself, but I wanted these done before a trip and they were doing my t-belt anyway), and I have not heard this noise before the event after my wheeling adventure.

Question: I assume these fasteners are installed wrong. It's the same on the left and right. Looking at the partsouq diagram, I don't see any nuts, so I assume the shop put them in the wrong direction, threading them thru a captive nut on the backside or something, leaving the clamp for the sway bar bolted effectively on just one side. Can anyone confirm, or send me a picture of theirs?

Thank you! Ok… so those are actually correct.

In that case, any other ideas on where the noise could be coming from?

210k on the truck, in the last 6 months, I’ve replaced front UCAs, front shocks, rear UCA/LCA. All with OEM. About a year ago, I replaced the front/rear sway bar end links and rear bushings, the shop I mentioned earlier did the front bushings.

Sorry I can't help since you replaced the rear sway bar bushings and end links already, but for someone else reading with a similar problem, I had a light metallic jangling sound on low speed turns and bumps around the neighborhood, solved it by replacing the worn rear sway bar cushions/bushings (and replaced the end links, although it wasn't necessary in hindsight). The bushings/cushions on the end links were very worn/flattened and there was a lot of play where the end links connected to the bracket.

There should be a nut on the bottom of that downward-facing bolt.

Clicking while turning is typically a symptom of CV axles wearing out. Front-end noises can be tough to pinpoint. You basically have to go through every bolt, nut and ball joint and find what's loose/moving.

Thanks. I also replaced the CVs with OEM just a couple months ago, so not those. And I'm not clicking. This noise is definitely something slipping just enough to suddenly thwack into something adjacent. I've gotten to where I can reproduce it by taking a turn at speed, or taking a turn into an incline like a driveway. I'll continue probing around under the truck this weekend.

Also, I thought the downward facing bolt needed a nut too, but it turns out the bracket is threaded on that side, so no nut required (see shop manual image posted above). Furthermore, I replaced the sway bar bushings and end links long before this issue appeared after my wheeling adventure last weekend.
