Thanks,

it's a 1st gen 4runner, but the mounting is pretty much the same (I think 2nd gen truck has 1 less bolt on the front/each side)

mostly 1.5" sch 40 HREW with some 1" sch 40 HREW - 1/4" mounting plates F&R and the back bumper has twice pulled 3,500 lbs from one coast to the other with no problems (except the receiver should have been mounted further front, where it's at now with heavy trailer tongue weight it unloads the front enough to cause minor hydroplaning in heavy downpours)

There's more of building it in the thread for my faux-lux (see the sig).

I'm not a huge fan of tube bumpers, but I'm not really a rock crawling guy. That said, I will soon add protection forward from this bumper to the rear wheels and will probably use tube for hoops there.

That's the first bumper I've ever made. It was easier than I thought. I certainly wouldn't buy a rear bumper. I'm not sure if I can make as strong of a front bumper as ARB does, at the same or less weight, so I will probably put an ARB on the front someday. The sliders I'll make myself.

Thanks Dan,

Nice truck! I enjoyed your diesel conversion write-up too... I can only dream of doing this to my truck. The bumper build gave me some ideas since I also prefer the square tubing.

Thanks again,
Meatloaf

I built these for my 89, recently got rid of it though. Building up a 85 :)

Had I kept it, I would have added side support on the rear bumper. Came off a rock last fall and tweaked it enough that I couldn't open the tailgate. Pulled it up on a trailer and worked it back down.

Seriously, go buy some metal and start cutting. My local metal shop only sells in 10' lengths, so I automatically had an extra 5 foot section to do it again if need be.

I got a lot of ideas from Pirate. A lot of not-my-style tube bumpers, but a lot of really good ideas. Start with the brackets from the frame out to the bumper, and go from there. Unless you want to cut the body a bit, the bracket will dictate how high the bottom of the bumper can be.

Whatever you decide: post pictures! Nicest thing about working with steel is that you can always cut it again and weld it over and over.
