Thanks for the explanation. Part of what I am trying to figure out is whether the up travel will be limited by a 35 inch tire on say a 50mm lift in comparison to a 33 inch tire or if there is some other thing limiting up travel in the geometry of the front end. If there isn't any difference in travel between the 2 tire sizes it doesn't really make a lot of sense to get a lift if planning to stay in the 33 inch tire size. I thought in my reading that the stock coil/shock combo gives about 10 inches of travel which is similar to what most lifts give if I am remembering things correctly in my sleep deprived stupor.

Ground clearance and traction (lockers) is your trump card. For what the 80 is, 5” up and 5” down is good enough if you have plenty of the afformentioned attributes. Remember also that 10” of shock stroke equates to more like 14” at the tire point of contact.

This is where ignorance is bliss and those suspension calculators turn us into obsessors that spend more time in the shop than wheeling.

True, ignorance can be bliss and many times it is best to just leave it alone and not mess with it, but ignorance when starting to mess with something is at worst a quick way to waste money and be disappointed. Trying to fix the ignorance part as best I can :) Not sure it can be fixed though without making a bunch of mistakes through trial and error which is why I haven't messed with it yet.
