Has anyone ever had the bolt hole holding the front caliper on stripped out before? I just bought my 93 fj80 and there was grinding in the front wheel so i took it off to find there was NO bolt holding the top of the caliper on. When I finally found a bolt to fit it I realized it would not tighten, just spin in the hole. I took it out and looked at the threads on the inside and they are totally stripped. I guess the idiot I bought it from used a pretty powerful impact wrench to do his brake service because every bolt on the brake system was ridiculously tight. Anyway, is there a fix to this without having to tear down and replace the knuckle housing part that the stripped out ear is on? I called all over town and couldn't find a heli coil to fit it. Any help would be appreciated. Its too cold to ride my motorcycle every day

heli coil is the best way. If they do not have the metric one, try for a standard size. Yes you will have one standard bolt and one metric bolt, but it would work. Just find the closest one that will fit. You may have to drill the existing hole a little bit bigger, but it beats riding your motorcycle.
Good luck

Just had another thought. I can't remember how much room there is so this may or may not work. You could try getting a bolt that is a little longer and putting a nut on it.

Yep, happened to me. Kept getting a terrible wobble. When I finally looked into it the PS site threads in the knuckle housing were stripped. Bolt was basically just hanging there.

Since I was doing the axles service anyway I just replaced the knuckle.

75.00 for a used one from cruiserparts.net. Of course that requires a tear down and rebuild.

thanks for the advice. I found a heli coil online for 35 bucks but I am about to do the front axle rebuild anyway so I really think Im gonna just go ahead and get a new knuckle for another 40 bucks. Thanks again

thats not a bad price, Helicoil in proper size available day of incident was 75 bux here. Come to think of it It might have been a set of 3 with the correct size.

X2 on replacement, especially if your going in for a rebuild any ways.
Got a knuckle, birf, abs sensor, etc for 50 bux here at a pull yard, and they pulled it :)

In the mean time (which often leads to a permanent fix) try tapping it one size bigger and retaining the 17mm head if you can like mentioned above.

Good luck and whatever you do dont ignore it

Why pay that much for a heli coil? Just drill the stripped threads out and re-tap it to a slightly larger metric or standard bolt. :meh:

Heli-coils are a superior product to much of anything us shadetree guys can figure out at home, really.

I used to think they were "Mickey Mouse-ing" it until I started wrenching at a acid factory & got used to using them there, and then to add to that was when I really took the time to read the website - I had to eat crow for all the badmouthing I did out of ignorance - they are a stout fix if you install them correctly.

Just passing the word since I'm sure some think as I did before having 1st hand experience in some pretty bad looking situations.

About 10 years ago this same thing happened to me. The shop I went to heli-coiled it with differently pitched bolt, but it's still holding just fine 10 years later.

Just wanted to add some photos to this thread of using a Time-Sert. I used an oversized one as the hole was previously repaired.

does anybody have a part number / size heli coil or nut cert that I can use to fix my front caliper bolt. Mine is also stripped. Thanks!

My knuckle also stripped during my rebuild. Anybody know what is the bolt size and pitch?

Or better yet the Time-sert kit number?
