front axle rebuild went wrong!

Sean funny this is I have been in your shoes. I bought my first cruiser while in college. Traded in a good reliable vehicle for a vehicle that broke down on me twice just getting it the two miles back to the house. A lot of people come here and see your threads and just say here we go again. Heck I'm one of them. Having a 30 yr old vehicle that has been taken offroad as your only form of transportation is not a wise move. But who said you or I (when I was in college) were wise. I spent lots of weekends fixing that cruiser myself, lots of money from my part time job went into that cruiser.

Cruisers are not cheap to keep going. They need constant maint. And if you take it offroad, a lot more maint. My advice now would be to save your money. Don't wheel it until you can fix it right. It will work just fine in 2wd around town. Maybe save some money and buy another vehicle that will get you from point A to B. If I had given you advice 15 years ago I'd say wheel that bitch till it breaks and do the cheapest thing you can to get it running again. Beer is more important than a running vehicle. It looks cool even when it's not running and you can always hitch a ride or ride you bike.



What ever you do don't do what I did and sell it. You will regret that day for ever.

Troll to be honest, mine is in REALLY good shape and really hasn't giving me any problems. I am truly greatful to own the most legendary offroad vehicle ever made. I would have to say in the 1.5 years that i've had it, the thermostat, carb rebuilt, front axle rebuild, and now front driveshaft have been the only problems i've had mechanically. I won't have to do the carb or front axle rebuild for a long tiem. The rest is just maintanace, hasn't broke down on me yet (knock on wood). And with the way i take care of it, i don't think it will, i know i just cursed myself. Anyway, some people like to have brand new cars, but not me. I don't think i would EVER sell this truck. I couldn't make myself, after all the hours of hard work, money, and countless memories i've had with it.

CV joints don't have the angle that regular joints do maybe the joints are maxed out and under stress and are rubbing.

Sean I and I measured his caster as +5 degrees and his pinion angle as -4 degrees. He has 4 degree angle shims with the thick part to the rear of the truck. We talked about getting 6 or 7 degree shims to sacrifice a little of the positive caster to get that pinion pointed up a little more as the U-joint angle is pretty steep at the pinion.

I am convinced the PO used the double-double cardan front driveshaft to avoid a cut and turn. We looked very closely at the DC's and found that two of the U-joint caps were hitting the center cage. 45 seconds with the 4" angle grinder and Sean reports the problem is gone.

Although I have never seen a DS quite like this it does work and he is a happy camper without spending any money. I still say a cut and turn with an early FJ60-style front driveshaft is the long-term solution but now he is on his way.

he should not need a cut and turn with a 4" lift and extended shackles. i know of at least four cruisers that ran 4" lifts with extended shackles and no double cardans, including my old nuclearlemon. i had 4" skyjackers, advanced handling kit and 1" over shackles, with 4 degree shims in backwards and ran low highway speeds in 4wd with no issues. i currently am running soa with no cut n turn and i run highway speeds in 4wd with no dc up front (i do have one in back). all you have to do is get your flange angles within a degree or so of each other.

and the reason having two double cardans don't work is because they are fighting each other....it's surprise anyone ever was able to get the driveshaft balanced, if they even bothered.

Didn't look back that far, I guess. The whole thread's been kind of a trainwreck.

A lot of misinformation in this here thread. Some of it in the beginning, some of it more recent.
