Hey guys, i am trying to get the rig ready for the cruiser crawl in october. So i am fixing anything that needs to be fixed. I did a front axle rebuild with new seals and new bearings. Now the click click noise that constantly comes from the front axle in 4wd is still there only quieter.:frown::o This sucks cause that was A LOT of work and took me 3 full days of work. Do birfields only make noises when turning or also when going straight. At this point i am thinking it is my driveshaft. Really don't want to tear back into this. Any suggestions?

How did the Birfs look when you cleaned them out?

Well i know i'm gonna get flamed for saying this and that i had it coming, but actually i never took the inner axle out of the birfield.:whoops: I really wanted to but this is my dd, and i had to drive to school and work the next day, so, really had no choice. Unfortunately, in my case any major repair to the cruiser has to be done between friday, sat, and sun. But they looked ok on the outside which really means nothing, a fellow local mudder told me to rotate the birfield around to see if there was any binding, none.

Here we go again!

Badass -

Why don't you put the front on jackstands, and see if you can isolate where the noise is coming from?

Turn the tire / wheel with the hubs unlocked, and make sure you don't hear anything in the tire / spindle / bearings / brakes & rotors.

Then lock the hub (one at a time - Transfer case in Neutral) and turn things and see if you can hear where the clicking is coming from. Use your mechanic's stethoscope to try and isolate if it's in the knuckle, third member or drive shaft.

Turn the wheels (steering) and see if it's louder or stays the same.

Etc.

No one can answer your questions except you - and to answer them you've got to figure out where the noise is coming from. Or (depending on how loud it is), just run it - you'll find out how serious it is, and maybe get some advice from the Cruiser Gurus in October...

Good Luck =

Yeah my cruiser makes all kinds of interesting noises. Still running strong.

x2 on that one. My '62 is a noisy thing.

Ok, here is a report, i put the truck in 4wd high and low but no hubs locked and drove around, no odd noises. Locked the hubs in 2wd, no odd noises. Locked the hubs and in 4wd low range going up a steep incline while at idle in 1st gear, i can constantly hear a metallic bell noise every rotation the axle makes. I will get a video for yall later this afternoon. The weird part is it does it while going straight but not really while turning left or right. Keep in mind it only does it when there is load on the drivetrain, i.e., braking while in 4wd lo range. I will lift up the tires and spin them with the hubs locked later this afternoon and let yall know. Thanks.
