front axle rebuild went wrong!

Doesn't seem like it would be the front U-Joints, as they should make the same noise whether turning or going straight.

Do you think it could be the u-bolts are loose, cause the left springs are always shifting around making that annoying pop noise, but i don't think the axle noise and the loose spring are related.

or worn shackle and pin bushings?

Ok, i have the video i promised and it seems like it has got worse :frown:
I just recently added the aals in the rear and it's great, fixed the stance of the truck, however, while i was fixing the e-brake and changing the gear oil, i decided to drive the truck on pavment in 4wd, with hubs locked, but no rear driveshaft installed. It now vibrates vigurously in 4hi upon acceleration and makes bad noises. Does the same in 4lo. It makes the metallic noise upon accelaration and while braking heavily in gear.

Here is the link to video

Sounds like the noise is coming from the double cardan joint.... I never seen on mounted on the drive axle... most mounted on transfer case end.....flip it around..

It's dark outside and my light is broke but i'm determined to find out what the problem is, i'll report back in an hour. Thanks.

Cool Video tho.... so, the show ended before you ran it with the front hubs disengaged, still make that noise with no load....?

Sean's front driveshaft has a DC at each end: transfercase and third member. It has probably what 4-6" of lift with no cut and turn. I'm inclined to think this is due to the driveshaft..assuming all else is well inside the axle.

DC on both ends is Bad JuJu... no workie.. too much wiggly...

Here we go again!

Badass -

Why don't you put the front on jackstands, and see if you can isolate where the noise is coming from?

Turn the tire / wheel with the hubs unlocked, and make sure you don't hear anything in the tire / spindle / bearings / brakes & rotors.

Then lock the hub (one at a time - Transfer case in Neutral) and turn things and see if you can hear where the clicking is coming from. Use your mechanic's stethoscope to try and isolate if it's in the knuckle, third member or drive shaft.

Turn the wheels (steering) and see if it's louder or stays the same.

Good Luck =

Rocky

I did this and the wheel makes no noise while spinning by hand turned or straight forward.

Ok the side of the c joint that goes into the 3rd is not flat, it doesn't mount to the t case because it has a circular metal "seal" sticking out that doesn't allow it to seat properly on the tcase, but i was atleast able to get 3 of the 4 screws half way tight. The other side does bolt up to the third just fine, in 4wd it no longer makes the noise anywhere near the volume it was doing before. Very, very quiet, even under load, at some points i couldn't hear it. So i beleive it is the joints on the shaft or is it the angle that it is at? Do yall think a new dshaft is in order or should i rebuild the old one? Sorry for the long description and thanks to everyones suggestions.

???

Can you post up some clear pictures of this? I am having a hard time following what you are saying.

Seems he has miss/matched yokes.... just by looking at the video the drive line has some wobble and has hard spots in the rotation..... I would at least try lifting the pinion angle up about 6* and see what happens......

You mean placing the floor jack under the third member assembly of the diff and rotating it up by jacking it up? Leaving the axle assembly on the jack stand of course.

Yes, i do agree, the pinion angle is horrible, probably what caused the premature ware in the shaft. Could it be that the noise is caused by the harsh angle which is putting an increased amount of stress on the u joints in the shaft? Do i need shims for this? I ask this because my springs already have 4 shims in each one of them.

Once my heep had a bad trans mount causing the front drive to barely shift, just enough for it to tap the skid plate, it sounded identical to what yours sounds like, especially on inclines or when the drive train was under load...
