Frickin stuck PCV!!

suprisingly enough, my grommet popped out whole with the pcv. I could have reused it, but threw the newby in instead and dropped the old in the bottom of the tool box. Damn the hoses were brittle though, shattered. Keep in mind that a simple pcv job might very well involve a grommet and hose. I also swapped my breather tube right next to it cause it was cracked and equally brittle. Man the truck runs great now though.

Guys can some one add a photo of the PCV valve? It seems my Lc does not even have one if I look at the right place...

Look here! Ít's looking like everybody started to worry about PCV Valve. Maybe because of my thread :grinpimp:.

Clean engine bay.

I cut the grommet with an exacto knife. 3 cuts and pulled out just fine.

holy crap that's a clean engine.

So I spent today trying to get the freaking grommet out with no luck.
I read that thread - https://forum.ih8mud.com/80-series-tech/199459-tb-iac-maf-pcv-clean-replace-done.html
Also one I am posting in but Can people describe in more detail how they got grommet out. Mine did not come off with PCV so its still sitting in the cover and laughing at me.

Break the grommet up - it's likely turned to hard/brittle plastic versus soft rubber due to age/heat.

Use pliers, screwdriver, whatever - just break it into pieces. Pieces will fall in, that's ok, there's a catch 'can' under the cover. Then fish the bits out with forceps etc if you're bothered by the bits in the 'can'.

Then replace with a nice new rubbery grommet and repeat the process in another 10 or so years time :)

cheers,
george.

So just cut into pieces? My grommet is flexible but I dont know how long was replaced and there is oily residue around it so I am assuming its not sealing PCV valve correctly.
Where is the hole in that catch can underneath the grommet? I can't see it.
Thanks for sugestions,
I am completely pi$$ed that this rubber is giving me so much trouble :hhmm:

I ran into this problem with my son's 80 2 weeks ago. I ended up removing the valve cover and found out that all the spark plug tube seals had became brittle and cracked. Actually a good PM service getting all new gaskets in there.

It's perfectly safe to just break the grommet up - it can't fall into the 'works'. It's cheap to replace.

i.e. breaking the grommet into bits is the common approach to removing it.

cheers,
george.

I broke it then used a long small set of needle nose to take teh pieces out. There is a little cage like area in there that will not allow the pieces to fall through

Read this thread and it definitely helped me out with this issue I was having. PCV was stopped up so it was time to change it.

Thanks guys.

I changed the PCV valve and grommet a few weeks ago for what I think was the first time ever on this vehicle. I used visegrips with a pipe extension and a hammer handle braced on the valve cover and lifting eye as a fulcrum point. After applying some significant leverage it finally popped out I up punching the top of my distributor and cracked the distributor electrical connector. It wasn't completely broken, but wiggled more than I liked. A quick teardown and a little 5 minute epoxy fixed it right up, but that old PCV grommet nearly cost me 200 bucks!

Breathed: had the same experience, except for the carnage. So should we start changing these out at some regular interval as a PM item, or maybe find a silicone rubber replacement grommet that won't harden with age??

isn't there some sort of penetrating silicone or similar lube that could soften up a bit the old grommets?

I think an maintenance interval of less than 15 years is a good place to start. Seriously, though, I don't know how long it takes for that grommet to harden to the point where it takes herculean effort to remove the PCV.

Maybe it would be good PM to replace the grommet every 30k or 2 years, but the valve probably only needs to be replaced every 60k. If you were to replace the grommet every year, you could probably pull the valve without any tools.

In regards to how long it takes for the grommet to harden, I recently (2 weeks ago) replaced my PCV grommet and valve after almost 72000 miles and 32 months of service. The grommet was rock hard and PCV valve was gummed up. I was getting some seepage around the grommet, but not horrible. The valve took some force to remove but did not require a major effort and the grommet while rock hard, I sliced it in one location and was able to extract it with a pair of needle nose pliers.

For the price of the OEM parts, I can easily justify swapping them every 12-18 months, sooner if needed.
