Please post up any good ways to remove frame rivets with out using a oxy/accetaline torch. Any tips on removing the rear frame cross member would be cool too.

Thanks

Grinder and an air hammer works for me...no torch needed. Just grind the head off...and air hammer away...shoots out like a bullet :D

There is no easy way short of a plasma cutter to remove the rivets. I've had the best luck grinding them flat with an angle grinder, then punching them out with a steel punch. They are still a major PIA, though.

Are you talking about the bended C channel one in the very back that the rear bumper is against? I just took my rear bumper off the other day and that cross member is literally falling apart......:frown: I really should replace it.

Hey Dave you can have mine it is in solid shape .... as soon as I get it out of there!

Drill out the center, and take off the rest w/ a grinder if necessary. Then pry off the part to be removed.

Good clean fun!

i'll use my flapper disc, then let 84cruiser hit them with his air hammer.
works great! just make sure there are no expensive cars near, they launch pretty good :D

sawz-all on the x-member. but watch out with the first cut, as you finish, the frame might squeez together like mine did. it grabs the saw blade pretty quick.

really with out a torch the only method is grinding the head and popping it out with a punch on a air hammer.

Even the torch isn't perfect. Maybe a rivet cutting tip on a torch might be better. I used every method trying to do mine.

On some I had to grind both sides and centre drill the rivet to relieve the pressure to have it pop out. Some heating the area around till it glowed allowed the rivet to pop.

Back when my shop was wan't as well equipped, I remove a number of them with a drill. Just drill out the center of the rivet and strike with hammer and chisel. Works well.

Resurrection!

I am pulling my rear (semi rusty)frame channels this weekend. Is it OK to just weld the Rear spring Hangars in place before i pull the rivets holding them?

You do not like the rivets and just want the spring hangers welded in place correct?? If so, there is not a single issue with that.

BTW, I just use an air chisel to remove the heads and then pop out the other side.. Works pretty easy and fast, just noisy..

Plasma works awesome too..

The easiest way for me is a 4" angle grinder. I cut both horizontal and vertical slots so that the rivet is almost completely cut up. Then a swift punch with a hammer and chisel.

Correct. I just want that channel out, so i can clean up that area of frame and box it in.

x2 on drilling holes thru the center of the rivets (obviously using the ti bits) and hammer off the heads (much easier with the centers drilled out). i used both my air hammer and good old BFH with a hand chisel with good results.

Just did some this past weekend. Ground them flat, drilled hole almost through, set punch in hole and smacked with a BFH.
No problemo...:hillbilly:
