Driving my cruiser home yesterday and it started howling really badly in 4th gear. I pulled over and it sounded as though there was some grinding going on. I let everything cool for a while and limped it to a more convienient spot and realised the transfer case was dang near empty so I added more and limped it the rest of the way to my house. When I decelerate I hear a grinding sound.
I figure I need to have the trans and transfer case gone through.
I am pretty mechanical and have been working on my own cars for many years. Not really sure If I can do this. Any advice?Anybody in the Seattle are that can recommend a shop to take them to?

The xfer is not difficult to work on and a rebuild kit is not that expensive. Tranny parts can be very expensive and a couple of special tools are needed. Do the xfer yourself or take it to Tor. If you don't know of a specific problem with the tranny, leave it alone.

Hi All:

Sorry to hear about that dude! :frown:

Spotcruiser just recently helped me re-build a one-piece t-case for my '74 FJ40 and no it is not that difficult. Give Kurt @ Cruiser Outfitters a call, he can hook you up with the t-case re-build parts.

BTW, the Seattle Cruiserheads will be having our monthly meeting this coming Tuesday evening in Kirkland. "PM" me if you'd like more info.

Good luck!

Alan

By the way, is your tranny overflowing with oil? That's kind of a typical failure mode for the front xfer seal, with oil being "pumped" from the xfer to the tranny.

I think you hit the nail on the head. I pulled the trans fill plug and it had tons of oil in it! I think it is also time for new ujoints and also the rear third member. With the tires on the ground I can turn the pinion quite a bit and it is hard to tell but I think the pinion flange has a little up and down play.

Mate i had the same problem with my 71' transfer case afew months back and i say give it a go yourself. The only thing i needed a hand with was lowering it and the gear box and then raising it again to put it back on. I used a towing strap tied off at one end through the center hump hole and my sister. Also i found that several of the shims and washers had warn/disappeared so as that there was way more clearance than what the manual said there should be. Just another thing to check while you've got it out.

If i can fix mine im sure anyone could and it felt great to have fixed it myself :)

I just finished rebuilding my tc, really, no big deal. Just take your time and take pics, lots of good info on here. Poser posted a thread where he built an orian transfer case, that helped me a bunch! I just used a bfh to free the bearings from the shaft, no need for a press.
good luck

same thing happened to me and my split transfer case just after I bought my BJ.
Noise, bad noise, discovery of no oil (well ok, there was maybe half a cup of burnt black stuff left), and then a total rebuild.
Mine was pretty stuffed inside. Ended up finding a donor case (later model with wider/thicker gears) and swapping just about everything out of it except my original PTO gear.
Like said, take your time, take photos every time you do anything (really helps later), and do it yourself. Should be OK.
Good luck.

I have been trying to get to my first meeting with you guys....I just have to get my cruiser back together!!! Maybe next month.

If you end up doing it yourself and need a hand, let me know, I live in Snoqualmie and would like to learn how to rebuild the tranny/transfer, Matt

I'm having issues getting my trans/transfer case out. My FJ has a Marks V8 conversion. I slide the trans back and the input extension appears to be stuck on the splines of the input shaft.
I have tried quite a few things heat and hammers but can't get it to budge. Short of pulling the engine I am stumped.

Are you lifting up through the trans hump or pushing up with a jack?? probably much simpler by lifting with an engine hoist than a tranny jack.

Well got it out but now have a bigger problem. Does anybody have any transfer case gears in good shape they call sell me?
Stock FJ40 4 speed one peice transfer case.

I just tapped my fill plugs to put 5/16 compression line to connect them. That way the oil drains back from my tranny to the transfer case. A rebuild is coming, but not soon...
