That sucker is gonna suck up an awful lot of propane, really fast. D cell battery starter? What's wrong with a modern Piezo ignition? Two for the price of one = 75 bones each is probably about what it would cost to haul them to the landfill.

I install Atwood 6 gallon insulated, piezo ignition water heaters in all of my trailers. Not only do they carry 6 gallons of potable water but, they keep the water hot all night long with minimal fire-up because, they are insulated. If you tow a trailer, you probably have the space. Subtract the cost of a 5 gallon Jerry can for water and the affordability comes down.

MUD members price : $399.00 plus FedEx.
The bottom line is : you get what you pay for, kinda like Harbor Freight tools vs well, ......

If I were car camping and needed a shower -and I do need a shower at least once a day - and hot water for domestic purpose I would opt for a heat exchanger and sleep well all night long knowing that it will work in the morning.

The L5 works very, very well especially for large groups. With an unlimited water supply the shower temp is set for flow and go. We used one apart of a straw bale building project with 20+ workers showering outside at the end of each work day (well water) and it never disappointed!

I have one too...but for my small group forays I prefer the much smaller footprint of my Helton hot water system...

For a couple parties looking for a super deal on a couple L5's this is the lowest per unit price I've seen for it.

We've got pretty much the same item, just different brand. Yeah, not built for expedition use, but more than adequate around the camp site for us more casual campers. I built a case for ours that holds the heater and our water pump system to feed it.

Since there's just two of us, it's way more hot water than you really need. I usually just fill a bucket by running it through the heater, check the temp, and adjust with a little cold as needed, then use the pump only to pull from the bucket. This helps to ration water much better than just dropping the pump into the 5 gallon can. It also prevents any too hot water from getting through, which you have to be careful about as it is easily capable of being way too hot. Around kids and drunks, this is an additional benefit to my bucket method.:D

Lol tell us how you really feel.

Hit the nail on the head spressomon..

My only dislike of this unit is knobs on the front. I keep it packed in a plastic container, and has been very reliable on campouts, and everyone loves a hot shower.

The only problem I ever had was the cast water supply in the unit itself broke after I left water in it the trailer over the winter, I since then just bring it inside. Customer service mailed another out and I got it two days, so very reliable in my opinion.

Gas consumption has never entered the equation as of yet.

I just ordered one...(well, two) and can give the second one away as a Christmas present....and I'll have a spare on hand.

How do I feel about energy efficient appliances? I favor them. That's why I also promote Zamp Solar systems and my own brand (assembled in Cucamonga, CA) of LED lights. Favorably priced and high quality.

How do the 20 people who built the straw bale house feel about energy efficiency? I am reasonably certain that such an alternative edifice is supposed to be energy efficient and I would bet that at least some of the builders are opposed to using fossil fuels. I would also bet that nearly all of them actually believe that climate change is caused by humans. Propane is a derivative of the oil distillation process.

Ask me how I really feel about buying tools and other assorted, uh, stuff from Harbor Freight. The cheapest priced tool is going to be the next tool tossed out. No connection with the product discussed and Harbor Freight intended.

Ask me how I feel about coming up short on a cold and cloudy afternoon when it is discovered that the lowest priced water heater won't heat water.

Beware the cheapest price.

Incidentally, homes built from rice straw bales can be a tremendous value.

Where do i start....

You market stuff for gas guzzling RV's. Build trailers that get towed behind vehicles that get gas mileage in the low teens. Then want to go on a rant about energy efficient appliances, mud huts and climate change, plus Harbor Freight tools.

And then when someone wants to post up a deal on a low cost shower that a lot of people have had good luck with.... You come here and s*** on it, go off on a hippie rant and decide to pimp your stuff that is 3 times the price.

It normally wouldn't bother me, however YOU are a VENDOR and to promote your stuff in this manner above is pretty douchy.

I have to agree with you Rwhat. Not exactly the comparison I would go head to head with concerning hot water making. I've had Atwoods in the last three trailers I've owned over 30 years. Thy are NOT endless hot water. This unit is....and when you flip the switch on it does have piezo ignition that ignites when it senses water flow and gas is present. At 75$ it's a steal. I take a soak down, soap up, rinse off approach when using this, and have had zero issues. It states a 30-35 degree water temp rise, but if you have it on high I doubt you can hold your hand under it without getting burnt.

I secured a price from this vendor on his solar stuff but I'll think I'll pass. I agree it is not the attitude you expect from someone trying to be "helpful".

Either he's a curmudgeon or maybe he hasn't gotten laid in a long time...or both :D

So, you guys all agree, this unit is too big for just two people. Back road travel and camping in a 55.

Thanks,

Ron

The L5?!...hell no, it'll be just fine. Plenty of guys have rigged up pumps that they use with a 5 gal can. I just hook into the side of the trailer where the water is, but I have an onboard tank and pump.

Thanks guys ^^^^

BTW, the way i took hot baths before i built my onboard shower for less than $150 bucks, I used 1 gallon water bottles put next to the camp fire. They would start to boil. Just keep it full and don't leave the cap on.

Let me know how your 20 people building grass huts like my idea. Cause it sure as helll is more eco friendly than your after parts and labor.

There is a lot more options out there and for less $$$

PM me and i can give you some non biased insight.

Edit, I'm speaking of the $399 endless water system. Not the L5

Been using mine daily for over 4 years to shower and use for indoor sink. Take it camping also. Works.

When i buy tools from HF they pay for themselves on the first use, any use after that is a bonus. Case and point was doing the front main. $65 bought not only the 300lb torque wrench but a set of large 3/4" sockets as well. I called around and couldn't even rent the tools for that.

People can bash a good deal all day long but fail to understand the economics. I'm not made of money, I do all the work and mods on my 80 myself.

Most of the time I buy parts and mods from mud members and vendors when they're close in price, when they're not I go elsewhere.

I posted a 63qt refridge that I found for $270 shipped yesterday in the camping section. The 43qt was posted on expidition portal a couple years ago and with some snooping I figured out the link for this 63qt.

The first post in my thread was the same as this one, sorta bashing it without so much as doing an ounce worth of due diligence on either the site or the product itself.

To each their own I guess.

and the vendor is not providing one iota of evidence or proof to back up what he said. Show me where it uses more propane ...show me where these fridges won't last....let's see some real world numbers to back up the claims.

You nailed it warezdog...lot's of folks aren't in a position to purchase the "spendiest" stuff around. Sure, value matters, as does longevity, but sometimes you have to settle for what your pocket can bear at the time. With a little tlc and proper care, you'd be surprised how long something can last.

If coastline feels he was "chastised" maybe he ought to rethink his approach. The reason we have such great vendors on this site,(i.e. like Steve from Southeast Overland,) is that truly care about their customers, and strive to find a fit for everyone. They understand the personal dynamics that make up the mix of good folks here on Mud...and use that to increase their customer base.
