Flywheel bolt snapped off flush with the crank. Suggestions? (1 Viewer)

I'm in the middle of doing an H55 swap on my 1983 60 and today while removing the clutch I saw that one of my flywheel bolts has the head snapped off. There is basically no material left from the bolt sticking out of the hole in the crank. Any suggestions of how to get it out? I've read most people say stay away from extractors..... I had to use a prybar to get the remaining 5 out, and given the amount of force it took I doubt if be successful with an extractor. Right now I'm leaning toward slowly drilling out the bolt until I get the the threads and then using a pick to get the rest, but I'm open to suggestions.
 
Sometimes you can weld another bolt to the end and turn it out. If you are going to drill it you can always use an extractor and see if it turns easily.

I don't think I can weld a nut to it because it's flush with the crank.... Don't you need a little material sticking up from the broken bolt to weld to?
 
You can weld a bolt (threaded end) that is two sizes smaller than the broken one and then use the head of that one with your socket. Going two sizes smaller should give you enough room for a small bead around the diameter without getting any on the mating part. Keep us posted as to what you try, and the results of course. Thanks
 
Thanks for the replies guys, I appreciate it. A welder is on my shopping list but I don't currently have one, which also means I'm not a skilled welder by any means. Not sure I want to learn on this project. I like the idea of hammering in a torx driver after drilling out a hole. Thanks for that idea @mattressking, I'll probably give that a shot. Any downside to heating up the bolt with a torch prior to removal? I'm already planning on doing the rear main, so I'm not concerned about overheating that..... Anything else I should be concerned about?

Well this chapter of the story has a happy ending.... I was able to get a flathead screwdriver to catch on a lip of what's left of the bolt. A few taps with a hammer and I was able to turn it by hand with the screwdriver to get it out. I think my transmission input seal leaking may have helped it not be too snug. On to dropping the pan and replacing the RMS. Thanks for all the suggestions, and good luck to anyone who finds this thread due to the same problem. I imagine you could make a crude flathead slot in the flywheel bolt pretty easily if you aren't lucky enough to have the lip I had on mine.....

That would be my first thought as well. They are too important to gamble with.
 
So I called my local dealer and they said out of production and out of stock on the flywheel bolts. Called another dealer and they said they could only find them for the fj40, but he said it was for the 2F motor. Was there any difference between the fj40/fj60 2F motors?
