Flange Cap Removal

How do you remove the cap from the flange of the hub without damaging the cap?

Kurt - I just used a sharp steel "coal?" chisel and was a little careful. It seemed to survive ok.

.99 cent flat blade screwdriver in the groove + hammer= loose cap.

Smack it a good one.

I used a thick puttyknife/scraper and hammer, when the gap was wide enough I moved to a screwdriver

When I worked at a gas station we used to use this tool.

Opps - after posting I thought it was maybe called a cold chisel and not a coal chisel. :whoops:

The other times I used adjustable pliers.

This time I used the screwdriver/hammer and tried a thin putty knife.
All it did was damage the cap lip.

I got fed up and used the pliers.

Switch to manual hub and will never have this problem again

THe wife says I can't go 2WD 80 as "its unsafe".

As for the "cap" I feal like I am driving a boat trailer. A friend gave me his boat to use. THe trailer is very old. It has a cap on hub and a very old beer can(steel can) on the other hub.

Screwdriver and hammer.
I'm in the middle the Birf repack, putting the DS back together. Work tomorrow, will finish up and then do the other side on Wed. It's gone awesome so far, no problems, the brass punches/drift really come in handy.
