fj80 cummins swap

I have a bit of interest in seeing this finished and how all the pieces go together. I saw the mother of all swaps yesterday and it has peeked my interest.

A contractor we work with had a powerstroke with a cummins in it, but it was a 24 valve motor that he had put a 12 valve mechanical pump and front cover on. Custom injectors, custom bent lines, custom turbo, all the OE Ford sensors plumbed into the dodge block and sounded like an effin International Harvestor when he cranked it up. It made me start thinking about this swap.
here is a link to a cruiser my buddy and I built.
some of the tech specs are not accurate.

Thanks. I have an earlier NV so I will have to get creative.
What are your plans for sound deadening and insulation?

just head and bend the "base shaft" away from the dash just try not to melt anything in the shift tower..... and it should go without saying take the shift tower off the trans and out of the vehicle before torching anything......

Non as of yet, We used some wide Mylar covered "putty tape" on the "Peterson 4x4 cruiser" only on the fire wall and in the trans tunnel.
see below...

nice .. just a question .. where was the application for that cummins .. wonder that coz the turbo looks pretty off with the intake ..
the motor I used is probably the simplest motor in the cummins family, it is the first gen non inter cooled out of an early dodge pickup.
the air filter is stock to the vehicle, not the motor. you are welcome to read the thread for more info, as the intake manifold to turbo pipe was made for temporary use, but......

thanks ! got it I probably never notice that before coz usually I'm looking for those with the front air to air intercooler ..

well its pretty much done:steer: ive put a few hundered miles on it and am now in the process of finishing up the 4" exhaust.as well as making a few things "pretty" im now on the hunt for some rebuildable shocks. F.O.A is my first choice but they had a bad fire and are trying to recover.
ill throw some pics up after a bit

I got a chance to bang.... grind thru the gears on this beast and throw some nice rich black smoke :-). Nothing like a Cummins thats for sure, Nice job Wes, get it done son!

Matt it's all in the wrist.....
on a side note i found a company that will make a gear case to correct the speedo assembly for around $90.00 the best part is its servicable, if you change tire size you can open it up and change the gears to yield the correct ratio. the companies name is speedometer service 800-634-2145
just did a weight check on the bruiser its 5500lbs even with a full tank of diesel and me at 210lbs
front 3040lbs rear 2460lbs
just checked stock curb weight of an fj80 its about 4600. concidering ive got 17" steele wheels and 37" tires and i forgot there was about 100lbs of exhaust in the bac,. its not to bad.

used the stock bosses inside the armrest, made a plate to screw the crossover to had to make a 3/4" speaker ring to space the speaker out, sounds great ill post a few pics of the double din head unit and gauge pod later.

not the best photos but im trying to photo document as when i remember :D
the stock shocks really limit down travel as you can see.
when i get a chance ill take some time and actually take some good photos and throw em up here.

ordered some nitro sport shocks today & built the front sway bar brackets, made the rear bumper plates, as i cut the rear frame/bumper off to line it up with the body due to the body lift.

got my speedo gears installed now the speedo is dead on. with the speedo being off i did a rough mpg calculation after about 300 miles its getting at least 15mpg and thats with some W.O.T runs down the freeway at 80-90mph for a conciderable ways about 30 miles. so with the correct speedo/odometer reading and no test runs at full speed id like to think ill be getting around 20mpg
300 miles and counting without any issues. i would like to think im past the "
drive it break it/find "bugs" fix it stage" after I service the axles its pismo bound in march:steer:

This is frikkin awesome!!!

Do you have any videos of this beast running and driving you could post up??

Once bad ass 80 fo sho!

Wes, Kick butt man! Whats with the twin tip pic above?

-Matt

Why aren't you running an intercooler? Looks like if you ran some puller fans behind your radiator, that you'd have enough room for a FMIC.

ill work on that vid for yah

Hey duder...

its a 5" single tip
(edit)
is see what your talking about here is another pic to clearify

I thought about it, there is plenty of room. the motor is a non intercooled, maybe ounce im "done" and dont have anything better to do i might pop one in.
my buddy intercolled the last one and mine is still way faster.
to be honest there is really no reason to get more power out of this it has plenty with the little bit of mods i did. I would think if intercooled it would get slighly better mileage due to the dense air:hhmm:
will se where im at mpg wise.
The fans are mounted in between the condencer and the radiator they pull through the condencer and push through the radiator this will ensure when stopped the a/c is still cold.

Took it out for a little suspension and twin stick test. The suspension performed well considering it had stock shocks one of which (lR) was missing. due to the lr shock not being installed it allowed the lr to droop far enough to shift the RR tire in to the frame. the front tires do hit the front lower control arm at full lock.other than that it clears the tires just fine. ill drop the bump stops to elimante the frame rub.
It pretty much idles up anything i used low range which i can honestly saw is for rock crawling or pulling the neighbors house down:steer:

installed the OME nitro sports and steering stablizer, just from what i can tell from the trip home from the shop its pretty close to stock. I think with the full size spare and some gear it will ride much nicer in the rear.
I also weighed the cruiser again with the trim and rear rows and rear carpet removed it weighed 5100lbs with a full tank of diesel no driver or passangers.

i took a video with my phone but it didn't turn out to hot.
ill make a better one when I can find the time.

Hoping to hook up with you and have a close look at that thing on Thursday

Checked this think out last week. Really impressive actually. The engine fits pretty nicely into the engine compartment. Not nearly as shoe-horned as I was expecting. Plenty of power for cruising down the highway and a TON of torque. Not super loud and pretty smooth running.
Wes did some amazing working on this.
Definitely seriously considering this swap.

Feeling interest.....

Took it on a few trips about 4k miles worth no issues. I've got around 6k miles on conversion
Got 22mpg towing a 3k trailer 18mpg going 70-75mph over the passes while towing.
I don't want to sell it but I've got a chance to buy the business I work for and could use the scratch.
I'll just have to build another one when time allows.
I have invoices for around $20k
$30k takes it home. Delivery is an option.
I'll post an ad with better pics in the classifieds when I get the time.

Wow, those are some crazy MPG numbers for towing a trailer over passes. I usually get 19-20 mpg on the highway and between 16-18 around town (depends on how heavy footed I am at the time).
