Hi All,

I'm looking for more information on getting the FJ80 smog compliant and one thing that probably needs to be done is replace the cats. However, I don't want to do any cutting or welding necessarily and would like to do the work myself. I've been having trouble finding cats that are CARB compliant but also bolt on as well for the FJ80. Do these exist? If so, where can I find these?

There may be more but here's one CARB-approved aftermarket option:

Do you know if these will fit the 3FE? Since the one I have is a 1992 model year and those specifically say it's for the later model years.

That one wont fit a 3fe.

This has been discussed many many times. A bit of searching goes a long way.
Most days I just go on Mud to make sure @jonheld made at least one grumpy comment. It reassures me that at least some things are still normal...

Thanks! I tried searching quite a few times but did not yield anything. Seems like the cheaper option would be to just get one of the universal cats and then have them weld it on unfortunately :(

I search with Google doing something like “site:ih8mud.com catalytic converter”, I feel it’s easier to go through results this way rather than with the search function in the forum.

Universals won’t pass visual inspection if they decide to look underneath.

I was under the impression that universals, as long as they're in the CARB database for my vehicle year, will be approved. Am I missing something here?

This is has been more effective in my experience as well. Using mud search pulls up threads older than the Dead Sea Scrolls.

In keeping with the grumpy nature of well discussed topics.....

Get off my lawn!

Did you happen to find any universals that are CARB certified for your LC?

It looks like the Walker 80104 fits according to the CARB Database.
Can search by model year here: Aftermarket Catalytic Converter Database

Nothing for direct fit though that's still available or reasonably priced. Even the one that a previous poster had posted is not listed on the CARB database.

Just stop by any local muffler shop and order both cats. It should be around the CARID or Amazon price.

They will cut the current ones out, recycle them and weld new ones in for $100 to $200 or so.

To update this post. I just ordered this one. Confirmed with muffler shop its compliant. Cheapest I could find by 100 bucks.

The 92 passed smog every year since Ive owned it but this year. Done all I can think of and barely will not pass. 134 ppm cO2 at idle (120 max). Smog guy and my mechanic told me it will be sigle digits with new CC. I’m tired of messing with it. Let you know how it goes.

Not bolt on.
