The seller disclosed that the truck was having transmission problems. The truck will not shift past 2nd. It shifts at about 2,000 RPM from 1st to 2nd but would shift any more past that. Does anyone have any experience with this or general trouble shooting that I can do before major repairs / transmission swap begin?
I had a similar issue after an overheat. Did a full Rodney flush, which you can find by searching archives. That didn't do it. Adjusted throttle valve cable. Helped it shift better from 1-2, but still didn't fix it. Realized I was likely looking at new granny, so gave the party trick a shot as I had nothing to lose. Drove it as fast as I could, about 35, slammed into park. After crying for a minute and wondering how long a tow truck would take, put back in drive. Shifted perfect through all gears. It's been 1000 miles and still shifts good. Installed cooler and gauge. If you are looking at a new tranny anyway, might be worth a try. Your results may vary, and you should research the party trick first.
Thanks guys. After doing a little bit more research it looks the party trick is in my future. We will do the Rodney Flush and try to adjust the throttle cable. If that does not work we will give the party trick a try. I will let you know how it goes.
I don't know if it's anywhere on IH8MUD, but the best description of the "party trick" I've read was written by Rodney himself and invokes beer and some of your 'mates. I saw it on the Yahoo 3FE list years ago and it made for a good laugh!

Hi it's Rodney here from Wholesale Automatics. You have a sticking governor that when cleaned will solve this problem as long as the transmission does not continue to jam it up with particles. The governor is conveniently located between the transmission and the transfer case and that is where the problem starts. You have to weigh up if it is worth the huge task of removing the transfer case (That's right the one that has to be taken apart to get those last 3 bolts removed) If you remove the sump and find something that resembles panning for gold then forget about it. (Time for a new fully imported reco transmission personally built by myself that can be found at the home of this years bash). Sorry couldn't help myself. However if you find the that the sump shows little or no signs of particles then do a service Replacing The Filter and refill using synthetic oil.
If this doesn't solve the problem then I will show you a neat EXTREME SPORTS trick where you and your mates grab a can of beer and a helmet each and all pile in to the car. Traveling down the road at 60MPH+ simply throw the car into Park! for about 3-5 second and put the T.bar back into drive. There will be a lot on noise and possible a coronary from one of the passengers. Remember to be doing 60mph+ (That's Right I Did Say 60 Mile An Hour Plus) and to move the T.bar quickly pass reverse when putting it into Park and then the same on the way back. You can repeat this procedure more than once and never try it on a Rolls Royce (Bad Things Happen).
If after all this no joy then the transfer case is going to have to come off and the governor is going to have to be cleaned out the hard way. This all sounds a little scary but what do I do? Tell you how to see if the transmission is beyond repair or leave you in the hands of a transmission shop that believes that everything is a change over. If the governor cleans it's self out and the sump is clean then your all fixed. If the sump is full of crap then it's all over before you even do anything and also if the sump is clean the Park trick doesn't work and it normally does then you have the option of taking on the task of cleaning the governor yourself.
The cable adjustment is also important and make sure that the cable isn't sticking ( This won't explain a second gear take off but it will cause a delayed or late shift ). Should get some interesting replies.
After checking the throttle cable and doing some minor adjustments we still we're have trouble getting the truck to shift into third. We tried the party trick and the adjusted the cable again. It seems to be working now. Transmitting will shift from 1st to 2nd around 1,500 RPMs and then from 2nd to 3rd around 2,700 RPM. 4th around 3,000. We did notice that the automatic transmission fluid was overfilled. Planning on doing a flush and refilling to the correct level as I have found some posts claiming the A440F is sensitive to fluid levels.
Mine is a party trick survivor as well, going three years. I did a Rodney flush too. These transmissions are extremely fickle about the proper amount of ATF in them. Too little or too much will cause problems with the shifting. Having too much could be a contributing factor to your problem.
After running it a bit, suck it up and do a full Rodney flush again with synthetic fluid, and be sure you have a cooler and gauge installed. Good luck and glad it worked out for now!
I would check your kickdown cable to see if it's moving inside the housing. I am having similar problems with my fj62. Mine is going to the mechanic this week to get it replaced.
Also, you may want to research the overfill issue on Mud...mine leaks between tcase and transmission, so I am running ATF in my case as well. Opinions vary on this but seems to happen often. Eventually, I'll reseal the tcase ,but for now seems like an acceptable solution and I just check levels each oil change
This is my Dad. When I say we this is who I am referring to. I will start a project thread pretty soon. We are making a pretty big list of "to does" for the truck. Hopefully we will get the transmission issue solved first.
I know that this is a post from a year ago but I would love to have more validation about the P for pass method. I recently had the pump, bearings and seals, and torque converter replaced and rebuilt and am having many of the same issues. TIA

We have since pulled the engine and transmission from the truck and are now in the middle of a Chevy V8 swap and will be using a rebuilt 700R4 transmission. However, I did drive the truck for about 6 months prior to that and had no issues with the transmission after this thread.
We did do a flush and refilled with automatic transmission fluid to the correct levels per the FSM after the party trick experiment. I think this had the biggest impact on the fix. There was probably double the required amount in there when we purchased the truck.
