So I sold my fj62 back in February. Picture below.

It was a solid rig, I sold it and I regretted it.
Went through a few other Toyotas and I'm back in the club!

Picked this 1989 fj62 Colombian spec today!

Needs a few things like power steering pump, a look into a pretty sloppy h55f and a few rattly dash pieces.

Pretty cool see 3f carbureted, with no secondary air inject or vacuum pump. It has electronic ignition and constant vacuum system leading to the carb.

And of course barn doors!

Dont mind my MiL or my excited son. (He missed the truck).

Steering is sloppy - drove 200 miles home at speed of 55-60mph and at first it was giving me anxiety as I got used it, it got better. I think I need to put 80 series steering box in it.

Also the brakes needs to be adjusted, front disc brakes and rear drums. It pulled a bit to one or the other side when braking.

Hopefully lessons I have learned in my previous build will come in handy here. Glad to be back!

first thing you need to fix is the fuel line feeding the carburetor. That NEEDs to be a metal tube. Anything else is a fire hazard. (Rubber hose with fuel pumping through it, pointing right at an exhaust manifold!)

I have new 3F power steering pumps in stock, on my website!

I would also recommend a good check of the springs, shackles, U-bolts, linkages and knuckles before throwing a steering box at it. That stuff is all notoriously bad on Colombian rigs. Have someone rack the wheel back and forth while you watch and you’ll see where the slop is.

Understood! I will make that a priority.

Yeah the steering is like very bad for the first quarter turn left and half turn right. I can shake the wheel and barely affect the steering at speed!

So suspension up front might cause the slop?

Most likely a steering linkage issue, but bad shackles/bushings/u bolts can lead to the axle shifting left/right as well. I’m not saying your box is fine, just start with the stuff you can see first. The other good test is to unbolt the drag link from the pitman arm and see how much slop you can feel in the box by cycling the pitman arm with your hand.

As far as h55f manual gear box? Any idea why the throws are sloppy? Linkages or bushings? Also noticed at speed 4th gear grinds, but at low speed doesn't. Syncros going out? Thanks a lot

For the shifting, the first place to look is the shifter handle bushings. There are two of them - easy to replace (I have both in stock). Remove shift boot, remove shift handle, and you'll be able to see them, or they might be disintegrated.
