Bumping this thread because I just added a third brake light and found it helpful.
I used an LED 3rd brake light kit from GoWesty. I didn’t use anything but the light itself since I soldered/heat shrinked rather than using the scotch locks.
It was reasonably priced and looks good. I chose it over other lights because it was on of the few ones that I could tell was finished/trimmed looking on the back and would mount cleanly. Only beef is with the gray double sided tape which sticks out like a sore thumb. I’ll change it to black at some point.
I did this as part of a larger lift gate project which also included fishing new rear window washer tubing. I used the old tubing to help pull everything through. I fed the wire through the grommet for the defroster wire and into the body with the factory wiring connections. Then I spliced into the LH brake light.
If you’re not doing all that I think it’d be easier to fish it through the RH side of the body—there is less going on over there. Only downside is there is no grommet at the top of the lift gate for the defroster on that side.
You might also be able to avoid dropping the corner of the headliner although it wasn’t as bad as people made out to be. Access via the rear quarter vents help a lot.
Brake light wire colors:
12v = green-white
Ground = white-black
