So call me a newbie but i did search this. :p

I have an old hj61 sitting around with a good front axle and a pristine fj55 with drum brakes .. catch my drift? :hhmm:

Can i swap the swivell housings off the 61 to the 55 for a disc brake front end? I understand that there was a design change in 1978 (my 55 is a 78). Is there anything else that i need to consider? :)

Cheers, D.

Yes, you can swap the 60 series knuckles onto the 55 axle. I believe you'll need to swap the long side inner axle to the 60 series birthfield. I'm not sur some of the idiosyncrasies of a 78 drum brake axle... 76 and newer all had disc brakes here. The 55 axle is the same as a 40 axle, so what you read about the 40 axles applies to the 55 axle.

The TREs on a 60 are larger, so you may need to do some mixing and matching. Are the 78 knuckles large pattern or did that start in 79? (bolt spacing on steering arms the same as 60 axle)
