Somebody should scoop this up! Looks like a good starting point for a restoration

"1965 FJ45 Toyota Landcruiser Short Bed Pickup with Removable Top

I bought this Toyota from a guy in Oregon, it had been sitting since 1994. I applied for a lost title. The title is branded, totaled reconstructed.

Odometer reads 44,300

I haven't had this truck long, but this is what I did to it:
Attached a lawn mower gas tank because there is old fuel in the original tank.
Attached extra-long ignition wires, just to get it going.
Brakes need to be redone, I have not touched those, one brake is dragging.
Replaced the hydraulic clutch master cylinder, the one I bought was rebuilt and it leaks a little.
Replaced hydraulic clutch master slave cylinder.
Rear drive-line was rebuilt.
Four wheel drive does work, Hi and Lo.

Asking $9000"

For learning purposes I am curious to know:

1. How does a removable top short wheel base truck compare to other configurations of FJ45s in terms of the overall units produced? Are they pretty common as FJ45s go? Relatively rare?

2. Are the tail lights in the rear quarters of the bed in their stock location? How close to fully complete is this truck? What hard-to-find parts are missing?

3. Is $9K considered a "good" price for a truck of this vintage in its current condition?

Because production was stopped shortly after the LWB started and so many being imported now these are rarer. They have the advantage of a little more leg room then the fixed top.

Tail lights are in the stock location. The lens at least if not the housing is the same as the 64-68 FJ40. Most parts missing could be replaced by FJ40 parts. Even the tailgate is the same minus the footman loops which could be removed from a FJ40 tailgate.

Price is at the higher end and wouldn't buy it unless planning on keeping original.

With no pictures under the hood I would make sure it has the engine listed on the VIN plate. Not sure when they stopped stamping that in the VIN plate but if it's there to restore original you want at least the original block that can be rebuilt. That is as close to a matching number cruiser you can get. Later only if original paper work comes with the vehicle and has the engine serial number would be sure if it's original engine.

While the cab is the same as the LWB parts like rear glass and the 45 cab weatherstripping are drying up.

If hadn't just bought another 45 LWB this past weekend I'd would have already pulled the trigger on this one. It is pretty darn near complete and I like the fact it is the original paint that that tells me there aren't any hidden body issues.

It is a rare bird indeed, likely the rarest version of the stateside 45's

The video attached to the ad offers a fairly comprehensive overview of the truck:

As JP says, this 45 looks like a real solid starting point. I like it.

I wish I could pull it off. However I am knee deep into swapping a 1HZ-T into place of the 3B that was already in my LWB. Add to that about 3 other half finished restos on various cruisers. My Land Cruiser ADD is through the roof currently :hillbilly:

I'll take you up on your offer next time I am in PHX, I'd love to see your collection and talk cruisers over a good cold

I just hope this SWB finds a good home here on mud!

Trust me when I stumbled upon the add I hesitated posting it here as I schemed various scenarios on how to make it mine:grinpimp:

Didn't say the price was out of line just if your not wanting to restore to stock it might be on the high side. This one should be restored to stock. Looks like it still has the stock engine. Didn't look at the You Tube links since I have too many projects and getting to old to take on anymore. A 45 was on my bucket list and picked up my LWB years ago.

JP as far as looking at my collection most the good stuff is kept out of town in a milder climate. If you come down I-40 your not to far away. Just give me a heads up and I'll be sure to be there.

Looking at the video the hardest part I see missing is the rearview mirror for the windshield. Not sure what fuel pump is using but the inline fuel filter just off the carburetor and rubber hose is not stock. Very common for the fuel line to be replaced like that. It also has the later spin-on oil filter.

It no one bids it's less then $8K. Not sure if you can register a totaled reconstructed titled vehicle in every state which may limited some buyers. Would probably hurt the valve as a collector. In AZ you can get a bonded title for vehicles with no tile which would probably not hurt as much. Totaled sounds like it been wrecked.

Rig came up for sale in Portland Oregon on CL for around 4-5k without a title last winter, It was posted here, maybe I did it?. Same seller has a 40 with a similar story. Sometimes a theft recovery will get labeled as a total/reconstruction. A lost title in WA might be listed as such without a proper a paper trail. I don't think he's put that much work into it to merit the mark up but I can't say that I blame him.

Seller also has the fj40 on ebay

This, from the ebay ad, could be a BIG DEAL:

"Frame horns are bent or the frame bent in front."

Last winter I talked to the guy who had position and the story I got was he did some work on the truck and the owner never came and picked it up to pay the bill. I told him I needed a clear pink and to put a mechanics lean on it to no avail so I backed out. I was going to go up and get it however I was not sure about getting it registered with the unclear history. Anyhow it was offered to me for 5-6 k range. Still plenty to do, I was not aware of the frame damage.

Anyone close enough to take a look? Better yet, anyone close enough to look, haggle, buy (I'll fund), and store at residence until I come up with an economical way to ship, OR get back from Korea, OR wait for JP to buy and drive out for another LC purchase out west?

Ha! Thanks Brian! We shall see... Every since I've gone down to one LC, I have the shakes! Need a 45 series to tinker with!!! :hillbilly:
