The fj45 I had purchased from Arizona was on it's way here and I just learned that it caught fire, burned the both cars in the trailer, the trailer, and the truck towing it all.

The truck is at the Mohica yard in Cathedral City near Palm Springs.

Any one near by can take a look, see what kind of shape it's in?

That is horrible news! I hope everyone is ok. I wish you the best moving forward.

Yes, the driver is fine. No one was hurt.

I hope the driver has insurance.

So, who understands insurance. Should I drive down to Palm Springs tomorrow (8.5 hour drive) and look at it? If it's salvageable, is there anything I can do? I assume they won't give it to me. I assume the insurance claim has to run it's course and then I could possibly buy it salvage from the insurance company?

On this kind of a deal, what are my rights? Or, rather, how do I protect my rights. It's not like I was there.

That's unbelievable, it may take a couple weeks. Once insurance has totaled the vehicle. They may have a buy back price. Hopefully the driver was insured and you are covered. Mike

Well, dumpie is definitely down, but I'm not counting her out yet. A little bondo, some throw pillows and I'm sure she'll be fine. Seriously, Looking at her, I thinking of taking the money and buying her back, taking the body off and getting her painted, clean up the frame. She might be savable.

That is a patina you don't see everyday. The bed matches cab now.

Wow, sorry for you.
You see here how some members fixing unbelievable rust. You can fix her as well. Yes, it will be hard,.. but,.. Just keep eye open on insurance.

I think with the thick 60’s sheet metal, it’s totally buildable, if the roof didn’t warp, it didn’t get too hot. Just make sure it doesn’t slip away from you, a lot can happen between you and the damn ins company. Stay after it!!

Hooo... that sure sucks! Best case, it just burned the paint off, saving you the trouble (if you were looking to repaint anyway!)
Update with any news.... hopefully positive!

I thought about the roof too as an indicator of how hot it got. The roof looks okay and the tires are flat but not melted.

I’m going to stay tight on the insurance. Iv’e already told the delivery broker to let them know I want it.

So, the insurance company is going to want to deduct it’s ‘salvage value’ from my payment. How much is it worth? $500?

Crap. Only four letter word that has enough meaning and I can say around my grandmothers.

But a little confused on the insurance stuff. You have the title, correct? If so, you own it. What the insurance company (his and/or yours) might do is give you a salvage (totaled) payment and that’s yours for whatever you want. But you still own the vehicle but it’s not legally driveable (condition notwithstanding) until you get a salvage title through the state police (which requires inspection and money). I’ve had a couple of totaled vehicles via the insurance company that I’ve retitled (salvage) and drove. I don’t think I’m out to lunch on that, but I get older every day and closer to being out to lunch. In any case, good luck, hope it has some rebuild quality left. Long Live Dumpie!

Difficult, but sure a good reminder to get an insurance binder from your insurance agent after money changes hands, and insist on getting a copy of a transport driver's insurance before anything gets loaded for delivery. I bought an FJ40 in Manhattan on 9-10, the day before 9-11 events. Knew it was stored in a parking garage below a skyscraper, didn't know which skyscraper. It was loaded an hour before all Hell broke loose. Took 2 days to get a message reply it was safe. Definitely learned my lesson.

I would take the time and go see what you're dealing with and take detailed photos. Good luck.
