I need to tow my 1976 FJ40 180 miles and back and need to know just how to set the hubs, transfer case, and tranny for towing. I have always just put everything in neutral and freed the hubs but have heard that an upper bearing in the transfer case would not be properly oiled. I think I was told to engage the hubs, put the transfer case in neutral and the tranny in 4th so one of the shafts would turn and sling oil up to the bearing in question. Any body have any suggestions or advice?

If you want to flat tow put the front hubs in Free and remove the rear driveshaft.

there was a recent thread where, like just about everything else, was debated to the moon and back 23 times. search for 'flat towing'

Search is good.

Hubs unlocked, trans and case in neutral, rear drive shaft removed.

Don't tow it with anything that weighs less that 6000lbs. I strongly recommend a dually. If it's wet, at all, don't do it. I spun around a fully-loaded Suburban going about 30mph. A rental trailer is way cheaper than any body work.

Even with the dually, I keep it down to around 40mph down any hill. A cruiser with no brakes is like an angry cop trying to do the PIT maneuver.
