I understand that this is a antique thread and is sold but I'm just wanting to pump you for info. I'm wanting to do a drop tailgate on my 79' and would like to retain the tube style tire carrier. Can you confirm that this combo functions together, carrier clears all the tailgate hinges and latches? Any chance you've got any pics of it with the carrier latched? Thanks again!

That IS an interesting question. Don’t know the answer, but IIRC, the dropgate was listed in the fiche up thru 77, and that would have overlapped the change in tire carriers by one year. So it would be logical to infer that at least the first iteration of tube tire carriers were designed with that clearance in mind.

That and the OPs picture, which is worth a thousand words.😉

The pic is definitely extremely helpful, as it removes doubt about the lower sill mounted items like the hinges and the rubber carrier rest/latch hook aren't fighting for the same real estate. My only concern is that upper left tailgate latch mechanism and the clearance it does or doesn't have with the tire/carrier. Op doesn't necessarily state all these parts were mounted and in use simultaneously and since this is a bit of a mix-and-match on what are now fairly expensive parts I was just hoping for confirmation from someone who had been there before. And pics, everyone loves pics.

thatsva good price probably go on ebay for 5 or 600

The pictures in the first post highlight how the tailgate fit flush on the top and against the outside along the bottom. Years ago I put a 71 tailgate against the opening in a 76 hard top model with ambulance doors. It fit flush on the side and bottom. Could use original hinges and side latches with a spacer between those and the tailgate. The one above would require rounding the lower corners to fit flush. By the hooks used for the latches can see this was a hard top model. Back in the nineties seen a 79 FST with a tailgate from SA. Almost positive it had rounded corner. That would have made sense since the 1/79+ rear sill design used the rounded corners as part of the way of adding strength to the rear sill.

I have a tube carrier on both sides with a tailgate on a 79. Latch hooks utilize the ambi door hinge mounts.

I've only ever seen the plate style carriers mounted passenger side, and only on the older (pre 76?) Models. Is that something you brewed up or is that a production part I am just unaware of?

It was a factory tube style Jerry can holder that I modified to work on the passenger side (just flipped the side the braces go on, unbolted the latch and flipped it to the other side).

Also had to add a support to the inner fender to match what the factory did.
Well that's pretty slick, Im gonna have to put that in the "ideas I very well may steal" folder.

I’ve seen some of these for sale. The 79 I just bought, PO put in a solid piece of sheet metal to delete the rear tub opening. Looking to cut that out and install this style fold down tailgate. Any recommendations on who to purchase this style from?
