It should be illegal to sell that bearing for $70. I got mine un-machined for around $12 and I just used a DeWalt hand held drill (very carefully) to drill the odd spaced holes for the 4 bolts. As far as the column is concerned, it's a 19mm shaft, which is super close to 3/4". I just chucked up the steering column shaft in a power drill and sanded it down (more like polished it) with some 180 grit emery cloth so it would slide into the bearing better. It was close to begin with though.

The other approach is to use the Cruiseroutfitters sealed bearing. It sits inside the existing supports and works perfectly. I think is was under $20.

Really, it's a super trick approach, that looks stock and costs almost nothing. Much better than the pillow block bearing that most people use.

$12 From CruiserOutfitters (Kurt) and I installed it with no problems. just had to smooth the colomn a bit.

stole this pick from another thread here is Kurt's bearing .just press it in there

I have to admit, I am...but I had a friend, who is a machinist bore the bearing out for a six pack of decent beer. Said it took him about 5 minutes to do after he got the diameter measurement. I wanted the bearing to be correct, and after I felt I was duped by TPI for showing a pic of one thing, and then shipping another, I wanted to maybe help someone else who wound up in the same boat as me.

I used the bearing from Cruiser outfitters. Works great. Just pull the column and put it in. Looks original and super slick. Less then $20 and no cutting or machining. Here's the link

Cruiser Outfitters

Glad you liked it. We've sold hundreds of them over the last 10 years and have some in trucks that have been holding tight for 15+ years and hundreds of thousands of miles. I've had the bearing (actually an inferior one that we replaced with our latest offering in 2004'ish) in my personal FJ40 since 2001, zero issues.

Kurt, what keeps the bearing in place? Set screw?

The bottom of the column mounts to the mounting plate bolted to the fire wall which keeps the bearing in place. You can buy a bearing at your local lawn mower shop for under 5 or 10 bucks. You can searchs this site to find the numbers or measure Id and od. It's a frt mower wheel beaing. With a little clean up of the shaft a 3/4" id bearing fits. I don't recall the od.

So the factory support sorta squeezes the bearing into its spot? Dang. That’s too easy

It's retained between the column tube and the firewall plate. Once installed it literally cant ever leave.
