FJ40 rock sliders and exhaust reroute? (1 Viewer)

I have a 1982 FJ40 diesel (with a 13BT engine) and I'd like to get some rock sliders on it so I can take it off road. However, the exhaust runs in the way of where the rockers would go on one side. Should I get the exhaust rerouted (I suspect the answer is "yes"), or is there a way to install sliders without moving the exhaust, or other way to protect the door sills? If I need to reroute the exhaust, should I take it to an exhaust specialist, a 4x4 off-road specialist shop, or a land cruiser specialist (I live in Northern Virginia).

I run outside the frame duals with my 40, and have full sliders tied into the frame in 3 places. It is a very tight fit, but it works just fine.

If the 13BT is like other B engines and your running a LC transfer case rerouting would be interesting. With the transfer case just about touching the frame not much room on the inside of the frame. You do not have to wheel very hard to bash the exhaust routed below the skid plate like Toyota did for years in the FJ40. On a FJ40 1/79 exhaust was routed outside the frame. Because there in a CAT bolted in line wouldn't be too hard to make sliders so could work on the exhaust without cutting and welding. But really keeping the exhaust in it's current location and have work done at the muffler shop would be the way to go.

Great info, thanks. Where did you get these sliders?

One of my friend's designs. It's folded 3/16 sheet. A competent shop with a press could probably make you a set.
