FJ40 reverse gear noise (1 Viewer)

Hi there,
Just done full nut/bolt resto on original 1976 4 speed FJ40 soft top. Gearbox, transfer & motor totally re-built. Now have horrible grinding noise whilst reversing. Forward gears are fine. Any clues? Thank you.

Shim on wrong side or wrong one. Mating gear worn.

Grinding noise whilst moving in reverse gear. Goes into gear ok.

See if there's evidence of the fan touching the shroud. I've seen loose/broken motor mounts cause that and it sounds like grinding gears.
