Hello,

I was talking with S4Cruiser this evening regarding my FJ40 Frame Issue that I have on my recently purchased 40 (see my post in the 40s technical section). The vehicle is at a shop in Raleigh and I was hoping to find someone that could go look at the vehicle and give me their thoughts on the frame and anything else. I am willing to pay for someone's time and I can explain further via the phone.

I have a lakehouse in southern virginia (on Kerr Lake) which is about 50 miles north of Durham and I had the vehicle shipped to the lake as that is where it will stay. I trailered the vehicle to a shop in Raleigh which is where it is sitting today. (I can share the details via the phone).
I will drive the vehicle a bit every other weekend or so and am just looking for a driver that I could drive the 8 miles to town and the post office, etc. This is not a vehicle to be restored but one that I feel is safe enough to drive the 50 miles or so a month I would put on it.

Thanks

Todd

Is it unfair if they're giving out crazy quotes? Based on the numbers in your other thread, I'd call that preying on the ignorant, but I'm critical.

Will respond to your pm.

Thanks and I understand your point. Maybe however the truck is really in that bad of shape or I maybe am missing something so once I can get a second opinion then I’ll know for sure if it’s a crazy quote.

For the pictures the frame looks shot. The quote for fixing it looks insane. I do have two frames that are not great but they are a lot better than yours. If you decide to go that route.

That isn't critical Johnny, that is plain truth. The OP needs to find another shop to work with.

Not one person responding has considered the fact that the poster is a newby and has ZERO idea what he is looking at. There may well be far more to deal with than just moving everything over to a new frame. A 50 something year old vehicle can have a lot more issue than just a rusted frame. Start adding all new brake components, fuel system and steering components it all adds up. Ever price out OEM body mount rubber? I am sure everything is just going to come apart with ease and nothing will be damaged in the process.

My point is, we have only heard one side and ya'll want to hang the shop owner. Kudos to the poster for not publicly naming the shop.

NCFJ, as the OP, I agree with you. Yes, I am a Newby at this but everyone is a newby at something. I very well could be missing things and the shop may be accurate for all I know. That’s why I will look to get a second opinion and go from there. I don’t have any ill will towards this shop at all. They gave me their estimate and it’s up to me to go ahead or not. Seems fair.

I hope you did not take offense at being called a newby, that was not my intent. As you stated, we are all newbies at some point. My point was more to give the shop the benefit of the doubt prior to a public lynching. There may well be more to the story. Getting a second and third opinion is wise.

There are pictures in the other thread that tell the story. Even doing a full frame swap, with a lift, would take a day, and certainly not $15,000+.

Well the $15-17K also includes new brakes on all 4 wheels and a new clutch. I still think it’s too high as well and that is why I am hoping I can get someone local to take a look at it and then I can look around for who to ship it too in order to do the work at a reasonable cost.

Just tell the guy you don't want to spend that much right now and take your truck away. Do more research, check around, etc.

We always make our worst decisions in life when we think we have only 1 bad option, when in reality, if we give ourselves a little time, we see other options open up and maybe not a choice of 1 or 2 bad ones, but maybe a good one in there as well.

New brakes and a clutch also won't raise the price that much either. Rotors/Drums, and calipers/hardware are easy to do and even if you replace all the steel lines and brake cylinder. That's a weekend project anyone can do...

Might be discussing a HAMOM soon for an assessment and some of the easy stuff...

Wisdom.

No offense at all. I have no problem with it as I appreciate the help people like yourself are providing and hopefully I can pay it forward with some knowledge that I have in other areas...

Any chance that includes a boat and an intimate knowledge of Kerr???

What is Kerr - like canning? Obviously I need to pay for something, myself :)
