I've got a 72' FJ40 that needs a new radiator reserve tank, bracket, cap, hoses, etc. The whole assembly really. However, the engine is actually a 76' 2F. Not sure how critical it is that the reserve tank match the engine.

@ToyotaMatt solution is the shiznizzle(sp)!

I used one from @ToyotaMatt as posted above. Fits that area perfect!

Did a '72 FJ40 originally have a radiator reserve tank? Just curious as I don't see one on the parts diagrams.
You are correct. After doing more research I discovered that it did not originally have one. My 40 was “upgraded” was a 76’ 2f engine before I got it and so it would have had a reserve tank.

A burp tank is not only an acceptable improvement for ALL older cruisers, it is a preferable upgrade for the cooling system that allows for recirculation, and environmentally sound. Just like plastic fan blades are preferable.

Strictly speaking, no it was not stock.

Stock is cool…but it’s not the Bible.

Thanks for your input! There is certainly a balance between when to go stock and when to upgrade. I agree with your assessment!

I wasn't trying to proselytize stock by any means. I was just surprised that a '72 wouldn't have had one OEM. Clearly my expertise on the older Land Cruisers is very limited. Thanks for affirming what I was finding in the parts diagrams.

In-Fact ...........

- Cooling System Over Flow Bottles were first Mandated in the State of California , Due to Increasing Environmental Regulations , this Preceded the 2F Engine Platform
indeed the F1.5 had them Dealer Installed USA Spec. in certain States at Certain Modle Years ....

- the bottles were Locally sourced CRAP from a USA parts maker like TRICO or Some NAPA Auto parts VENDOR most likely ?

- they ere not listed on the JAPAN made USA Microfiche slides that DIY has simply Converted into a very good and most of the time very reliable resource

- they were a USA Accessory in the very beginning , and sold thu the fancy and up and coming state of the ART Toyota Dealership Genuine parts Department
Retail Counter and also upsold thu the service shop as well

- much like a CB40M Radio , a AM or FM radio , then only offered in Cars and the HILUX Pickup , land Cruiser Radio Option was not Introduced till 73 0r 74 if im not mistaken ?

- a very GOOD related example of the dealer installed coolant overflow bottle kit , would be the WIPER / WASHER Bottle , pump and MOTOR , , HOOD Nozzles etc

that was offered basically at the same time window as the FJ40 it self ..........

so .........

Lastly , it's 2021 and would it be proper in any way shape or Form to let POISON Ethelyn Glycol coolant spill all over GoD's Green EARTH ? 🤔

HECK NO ! 😇
