FJ40 Quiz

I have a 1971 FJ40 conversion with a rebuilt 350 Chevy engine(less than 5,000 miles.) I have a 350 turbo automatic transmission and saginaw power steering. Rust in the usual spots, the heaviest across the rear bumper. Mechanically just about perfect with almost everything under the hood replaced, including all the things necessary to assure proper cooling. Needs a radio and headliner, body work and paint job. How much is it worth as I have need for another vehicle and the cruiser has to go?

i bought mine new in 73 for 4000.00 including tax and title work sounds like you paid to much.go on ebay look at what other trucks are selling for in your area in same cond .also try craigs list it wont take long to see what they are selling for then go from there good luck

Can of worms. People are going to ask you to post a picture. They will assume the lack of picture = rotted out Flintstone mobile.

Conditions vary too much. Every panel could be gone, or none of them, etc...

Rotted out body, running 350, power steering, auto trans, on a good frame? $2500?

Now, the "I have $99000 invested in it" guy is going to come here and tell you its worth more. And so is the "people are restoring these things and selling them for $35000" guy. Have either of them write you a check. I'd like to sell them my shares of Enron I paid $90 for in Aug2000. What's that? The stock market is based on what things are worth right now? :)

Nostalgia, back seat memories, and investment aside, I think you could pick up one with a similar description and be in that ballpark.

On the other hand, tires/lift/interior/etc/etc and we could be talking about a $9000 truck. Its just too vague.

Regardless of what it is.....when all else is equal....there will be 2 distinct factors:

Location
Season

About two months ago I bought a 71 40 with pretty much the same set up as what you've got plus a few things (lift, lockers, straight body, 36s) for $2,000. However when I went to the bank to finalize my loan they came back with a blue book low book price of $7,500.00. Its hard to say what a cruiser is worth. I guess it all depends on whose buyin and how much money they've got

...body will need some elbow grease, painting and possible replacements as rust has ravaged me. Well, what did you expect for 37 years of service on salty roads.

Ravaged by rust, huh?

If you get 1Kus for this thing as you have described, you will be doing good.....

Mechanically I'm almost perfect.

Jim Fix thought that same thing....

Tell your owner the 350 thing does not help at all. Unfortunately a rusty 71 with a 350 in it is not worth a bunch, parts maybe...... Ebay can be a good indicator. One more thing, go tell your owner we need pics to give any accurate judgment. Could change the opinion a bunch.....however, the way he is describing you does not help.....

Good luck

"I" am this and "I" am that. "I" will give you $5 to stop acting like an imanimate object is speaking in the first person.

Careful man, the user will likely pm you a paypal addy.....

just curious, why do a motor swap (less than 5,000 miles I assume the swap was recent) on a fj40 thats been "ravaged by rust" ?

ravaged by salt? location says "greeley, co". no 37 years of salt there. sand and cinders before the mag chloride, so it shouldn't be ravaged by salty rust.

if it's salt, it's midwestern which means it's most likely crap. a rusty rig with a $900/new motor is worth about $900.

40s in the colorado area (mild to medium rust) average $1500 for one that needs a lot of mechanical/wiring work to $15k for a beautiful one, but those all have decent bodies.

shameless plug time...i'm selling my 68 with a 350, soa, saginaw, sm465, extremely minimal rust, 36s, 4.56s and locked:D

Did you paint it the original color? That's like 99% of the value right there. Nevermind you said it has a V8, it's worthless regardless of the color.

Is that even a valid TLCA number??? :p
