i am in need of replacement gaskets or seals needed to rebuild a power steering box from a 1979 power steering box. the box off of a 4runner look pretty much the same. any ideas on where i could score a rebuild kit? any advice is greatly appreciated. thanks in advance.

79-85 mini truck rebuild kit is the same as 79+ Fj40 PS rebuild kit(which I dont think is listed anymore), should run around $70 for the kit from Toyota

internal parts are also the same, mini truck and fj40 PS.....only difference is the housing for the most part. ie.....you can stuff mini truck parts in fj40 PS box.....same stuff

I got a kit from the dealer for a 79 FJ40 PS box about 6 months ago and was told that it was 1 of 5 left in the US.

Box works great now but it would be a hell of a lot easier to reassemble if you throw out about half the ball bearings ;)

Thanks, I'll keep than in mind when I somehow pack them all back in.

Next question... Since the PS uses Dexron III, isit safe to use grease (tiny bit) to hold the BBs in place while I reassemble it? I just don't want something incompatible with the PS fluid floating around in there.

Last question... my rebuld kit did not include all of the teflon seals that I suppose could be replaced. Bad idea to put it back together with the old ones or not?

Thanks.

I used grease because I couldn't get it together without it. I placed the ball bearings in at least 5 times only to find that 1 ball was in the wrong place and the shaft would only turn one way. Gave up and used grease and they stayed in place fine. So far no problems.

My kit had all the Teflon rings but had several brass orifices that I had no idea where to put them.

I think the seals would be the main reason you would rebuild the box.

What was the kit number you got? I'll check against mine... I only had one teflon seal. And I have 2 rubber rings that I have no idea where they go.

Anyone know how many BB there are in the box? Mine fell apart when I disassembled it.

It would probably be easier to get another worm gear/follower assembly from a mini truck than try to get all those little balls back in properly. Depends on what your time is worth, but it might take a few hours of aggregation even if you didn't lose any of the BBs.

There are 44 balls.....To assemble, stick the worm shaft into the piston about 1/2" and insert a couple balls then rotate the shaft inward a turn and repeat the procedure till 33 are fitted.... then use grease to hold 11 into the guide and install the guide to the piston..... removal of the worm shaft from the valve body is a must if you wanna replace the inner teflon/oring seals.......

They offer 2 differ kits and I don't have the part #s at this time... but one is not as complete as the other.... I guess Toyota offers a kit for those who don't want to go all the way....

I have 04445-35011

I seems to have 2 extra rubber gaskets and 3 extra brass pieces (seats?). I am missing the 2 teflon seals that go on the worm gear.

If you know the number of the one with the seals I'd appreciate it. Since I have to go through all the aggrevation of the BBs I might as well replace everything.

the only other kits out there are listed for the 80/08 - 84/10 if all the power steering boxs are the same then there is these part # for kits ."gasket kit" #04445-35040 and 'worm gear kit "04044-60040 the kit you listed is for the 79 year power steering box .

Anyone know where to find the Toyota service tool kits to do this job?
