I was saving $ for one of these headers-I got a cheaper header to help me make it through til I had the $ to get a good one--now you say they are not available any more--True? Are the stainless ones that SOR offers comparable?

from the SOR website:

"Sor Stainless Steel Headers -

. . . .
(Discontinued - Not available at this time)"

After I closed Downey, Marks Off Road continued to make the Downy Headers. Now too little call for the Headers and/or particularly the smog legal Header. The smog legal Headers do come with the smog decal needed for C.A.R.B. when and if the smog Header makes it back onto the market.

Jim,

I appreciate the reply. I hope that they do make it back on the market someday soon as I have read nothing but good things about the Downey headers these last few days of searching.

It is sounding like I am stuck here and my old cruiser might just get parked for awhile until I can locate one of the nearly impossible to find California editions or get a whole new Federal setup (manifold, EGR, and downpipe) and cross my fingers the smog man says she is good to go like that.

I don't want to sell my '78, it was my dad's before me and I have grown attached to the old girl. We spent a lot of time when I growing up using the thing to drag logs out of the woods for firewood. BUT if I can't find a solution here in California my only other option would be to sell the cruiser to someone in another county or state where they don't require smog and look for a '75 or older cruiser to fix up instead since they are exempt from the man here in California.

The Federal stuff is easy to find, so don't get discouraged. Check the classifieds here, I think there are several part-outs going on right now.

Thanks I will check that out!

aren't the Man-a-Fre ceramic headers Cali compatible ?

I looked at the MAF Header, they are not that far away from being able to apply for a smog exemption, just need a hot air riser capturing heat off the Header and plumbing it into the air cleaner (plus knowing how to navigate the C.A.R.B. system if they did apply).

Sorry for the current situation. I've been stupid busy with other things. I'm gonna try and get going on another batch in mid-May.

Looks like 65swb45 is gearing up for a mid month (May) run.....I think I may have bought one of the last ones from the previous batch...Couldn't be happier with the product...I'd shoot a PM and see if there is a list..

Thanks for the tip. I was able to get my hands on one of this last remaining kits that someone else had actually returned.

DSRTRDR Thanks for the tips. I managed to get my hands on perhaps one of the last remaining header kits out there for the FJ40 (california version). Unfortunately I have been moving and rebuilding our new house right now so the cruiser repair project got put on hold. I have the big box and all the parts to install it just sitting in the back of my cruiser waiting for me to get some free time (or cash to pay someone to install it for me). Just wanted to say thanks again for the tip. Will update this thread again when I finally get the header installed.

Before I got my hands on the header kit I actually bought all the used federal parts to do the repair off ebay so I actually have everything to go either direction but I Think since I already forked over all the cash for the headers I might as well use them.
