Hello,

I'm looking for afuel cap for my 1972 FJ40.

I ordered part # 77310-60090 on eBay, but apparently its the fuel cap, or my fuel neck was changed by the previous owners.

Does anyone else have this style cap in the picture? If so what year or part number am I looking for?

Thanks in advance!

I did. It just clicks on and doesn't actually twist on, because it's vented. The problem is gas smell outside that doors gets pretty bad. I don't think that is OEM.

My 1974…definitely looks different.

From the factory the fuel cap should let air in, not out. The air/vapors should be expelled thru the EVAP system. This reduces/eliminates the fuel smell when working properly.

My '74 FJ40 has the same Filler & Cap as those pictured above.. The "Filler Neck" is original to my FJ40... from when I bought it new in Dec 1973. (I might have replaced the cap during those forty-seven years..) Maybe this will help, some.

@JAG666 thank you. Are you referencing my neck and cap photo or the one from @hobbes?

@FJ Rock

JAG quoted hobbes, they both have 74's, A + B = ?? :hmm:
FJRock;
Yes, I did (reference Hobbes).. That said, my "74 FJ40" has a Build Date of October 73.. In theory, it could be a "blend" of the two model years.... UNLESS there are specific in-set dates for parts placed in-service..
All that said, I've never seen a "Gas Cap" (on ANY vehicle) like the one you pictured.. Weird looking..

Thank you Charles. I ordered another cap, so we shall see. Hopefully 3rd times the charm!

@FJ Rock

The original fuel cap (77310-60051) for FJ40's 9/71 to 9/77 was superseded by 77310-60090.

Pictures of 77310-60090 from EBay look like the one Hobbes provided.

The one you posted is definitely not a 77310-60090. Yours has the appearance of a used locking gas cap. You may want to purchase your next one from a dealer.

List price from a Toyota dealer is $20.91.

The cap in my photo is the updated p/n. When I bought my FJ40 it had an aftermarket fuel cap with a hole drilled in it.

I think my filler neck is American. Went by a hotrod shop and a late 60's Chevy C10 cap fit. So the garage owner Jamie looked around and found a NOS Stant gas cap and gave it to me for $0! Made my day.

This old FJ40 is coming together and I'm putting some miles on her already!

Thank you everyone for your help.

FWIW:
For reference. I know mine is earlier (‘70). The first cap looks to be a ‘locking’ cap.

@LandCrusher'70 That looks a lot like mine on my 1972. Maybe mine is stock, and looks like you also have a Stant locking cap. I noticed on both my old and new cap you have to really press down and turn to make sure its secure. Same for you?
I have to give it a push, but not too much. I would say mine are ‘snug’.

I just replaced my cap on my '72 with the locking Stant P/N 10583...less than 10 bucks. Fits great.
