I'm hoping for some help on this one. I have a 1970 FJ40 (08/1970 production date) and need a new fuel cap. This one is an authentic barn find that has been sitting in a barn since 1997. The previous owner had what I think might be an aftermarket locking fuel cap, or it could be the original, but the rubber gasket is entirely shot.

Based on what I can find, this looks to be the OEM part: Part #77310-60050 FJ40 W/VALVE, L/KEY 02.1970 - 09.1971

I have tried to locate a replacement at all the usual suspect parts places, but am not having any luck coming up with the version that I need for my 08/1970 production date (looks like the fuel caps on either side of the 02/1970 to 09/1971 dates are different and not interchangeable). It looks to be a vented cap. Also, I'd really like to stay with a locking option due to where I live.

Has anyone had to source a similar fuel cap? Does anyone have ideas on where I might be able to find a new replacement? I don't think the rubber gasket on a used '70 fuel cap will be in any better condition.

Any information would be appreciated. Thanks!

I have included some photos of my current fuel cap for reference.

If you look inside the filler neck and see a small tab with a hole in it, that is for the chain that would be OE for your model. Pic of one here:

Nice FJ40 find, looks like a really clean original!

That fuel cap is aftermarket, I would toss it.

Here's an original replacement correct for your year.

MDH33,

The FJ40 is almost entirely stock. I bought it from the 2nd owner, who picked it up in the early 80s from the original owner with less than 50k on the clock. 2nd owner drove it to 85k and parked it because she bought a new truck. Nothing was wrong with it; she just started using one of her pick-ups more and put it in the barn in '97 with the idea that she would do a minor restoration on it down the road. She never returned to it, and I was lucky enough to talk her into selling it to me.

Thanks for the info on the fuel cap and the link. I guess I'll have to give up on having a locking cap, but having a fuel cap that seals up will certainly be better.

I really appreciate the help!

There is an OEM Toyota locking cap, they're rare. This one came with my '69 and even has a matching key to the ignition.

There are counterfeit Chinese knock offs on Ebay, so if you find one cheap that looks new, beware. 😉
