Thank's hdjtachtig, These are the best photo's I've seen to document what the seats originally looked like. West Coast Customs in Placerville is gonna like it. Thank You, JohnJohn, I emailed you some pics, here is a copy. This is 1962 fj40 (very close to the original coral color and texture)View attachment 1034862 View attachment 1034863 View attachment 1034864 View attachment 1034865 View attachment 1034866 .
yup, drivers side one bolted down. if you do, you can't get to the bolts to adjust the seat, iirc.
As it happens I have a full set of (what I believe are) unmolested seat cushions out of a 25 HT, pictures here. I'm away from my stuff too, but I think the 25 and E-40 front seats are the same, I'll have to check on the jumps...Would consider giving these up for patterns....

Paul, Thanks much. All of the photos that I have been accumulating seem to be telling a less-than-clear story of how the driver's seat was assembled. I do not have the front seats in front of me at present as they are at the upholsterers. The attached photo, taken off ih8mud, is what is really throwing me off. The steel panels are clearly Toyota's. (the debossing with curved ends) This is the ONLY photo I have been able to find that has the panels.@RIDGEROCK49
Above you find some pictures of my seats from early 1962. The filling is horse hair.
Paul, As I said, some of the photos are throwing me off. Thanks for the link to those 1971 photos. I will have to peer under my '68 and see what mine has. Taking the panels out of my investigation may in fact, simplify the re-upholstery questions. I appreciate the info.I think later seats have these steel bottoms, like this:
If this is for your 61 these are not the stock seats.![]()

Edit. I don’t know where that text comes from but this a link to an eBay ad.
I believe ALL the passenger seats still retain the original vinyl fabric and horsehair stuffing. It's the driver's seat that is being re-done. I am using the passenger seats as reference for stitching, color, etc. Accumulating so many photos that it is hard to keep them all straight and sorted.Paul, As I said, some of the photos are throwing me off. When Shane was making seat covers, he flaked on me and never made mine but I got him to send me the last roll of reproduction vinyl he had made. I could get you a sample of it.I believe ALL the passenger seats still retain the original vinyl fabric and horsehair stuffing. It's the driver's seat that is being re-done. ...that would be very cool. I did not yet see what the upholsterer has picked from his swatches. R. WheelerWhen Shane was making seat covers, he flaked on me and never made mine but I got him to send me the last roll of reproduction vinyl he had made. I could get you a sample of it.
Ah ha!! You have a whole roll of the vinyl? Maybe that's enough for my driver's seat. My upholsterer indicates he will need to see the sample before going any further. I will send it on to hime once I get a look at it. How much fabric do you have? When Shane was making seat covers, he flaked on me and never made mine but I got him to send me the last roll of reproduction vinyl he had made.
