Hey can I ask, what gears are in your diffs? And how does it do for power? Mine is an auto with 4.10, but I have a lead on a good price for 35s so I’m just trying to gauge if it’s going to be a dog right out of the gates and need to factor in time and $ for gears along with it
I’ve got a manual with the same axle ratios as you but I’ve also got 3:1 t-case gears. I can turn 33s just fine and in fact I often start in 2nd because 1st is so low. I’m hoping I’ll be able to get by on road without re-gearing and rely on the low t-case gears to get me by off-road. Not sure how you’d be with an automatic but I’m sure other might have some direct experience to share.

Really, I'd like to be on 33s, 255/85R16 or 285/75R17, that size seems perfect to me.

Just for interests sake im changing over to 285/75R17s at the moment, though they are slightly larger than my worn 35x13.5s.

I have a set of those trail grapplers in 35x11.5 that I will be mounting up soon. Good looking tires. I prefer the 35x11.5 proportions to 285/75 but they are pretty similar overall.

I used to run 315 75 16 Mud grapplers on steel beadlocks, which I miss dearly, they were 34.6. But the cops around here have been cracking down on oversize tyres and beadlocks. Been older and wiser than my early posts, I dont need that hassle now when going out with my young son. The 285 75 17 are 34.1 so I'm not going to miss the slight change, but all legal now.

What is the cut off for size allowance? 34.5?

So your new 34s (285/75R17) are bigger than your 35s? Are Toyos that much undersized in reality, or yours are just that worn? Perhaps I mis-read everything- been known to happen :D

I think a combination Toyos are a little small and they only have 6mm tread left.

i found this as well going from a 35 trepador bias to a 285 75 r17 geolandar g003 mt.... 35's were 34" ..... 285's were 34.5

im finding my 4.10's are just about right for 34\285 7x tires
I do have a turbo tho, and could *probably* do the 10% overdrive gears

Fjben inspired the tire (and size) choice
His rig just looks right with em
Treps for the bush, geo's for everything else

That’s a big thing I tell people, when considering a tire go to the actual tire manufacture site and look at the detailed specs, BFG is one I always tell people to check because for a while they were quite different from sidewall size to actual size

Ya like if you wanted 35's you had to order 37's

Want to share my setup for 35s BJ74

Fenders were trimmed quite a bit to accommodate 40s + front shackle reversal.
Later I decided to make car long distance friendly, put shackles in original position and put 35s.

Worth to note that after I put shackles in original position, I’ve replaced 13BT, yep it might sound strange, but I wanted to experiment and went with naturally aspirated 15B.
Gears are stock 4.11, H55F.
Power wise engines are almost identical, 13BT being more punchy while 15B more linear.
If I put 4.56 gears, I think 15B will outperform 13BT, but that’s not the goal.
Hope this info helps who hesitate to cut fenders or move axle forward - you can do it all together, if you want.

Has anyone trimmed the rear wheel well? Currently runnning 33s but plans for 35s or 37s, (probably +37s in the end as, why not)

I am fixing the rust and have to redo the rear wheel well and am considering trimming them now so i dont need to undo my work later.

Does anyone have a picture of their rear wheel wells trimmed or is it totally unnecessary.

Also, if moving the rear axle back an 1 inch, will it interfere with the gas tank?

i moved the rear axle back.... no issues on a bj70
and am on 35's and flares and no need to trim (maybe if you want to get rid of rust)

I chopped my rear guards out all the way flush with the inside tub and welded panel steel back in with a lip to mount rubber flares, clears 36x12.5 with no body lift 😁
