Went to go change pads on my 87 bj74 and the pads I got are too small. At first I thought i ordered the wrong pads (fj60/62) but then did some digging and my calipers appear to be different.

Can anyone chime in? I’m thinking they are either 90+ 70 series? Or maybe fzj80?

the brakes feel great but the pads are low. So im just interested in what pads to buy.

Below is a photo of my caliper along with new vs old pads.

Looks like you have the newer 90+ 70 series calipers (same as 92-01 4Runner). Hard to tell from your photo but the newer calipers should have S13WB as the casting mark. The pistons on the newer calipers are both the same size, older calipers one piston is smaller than the other. Newer calipers take pads for a 92-01 4Runner, 93-98 T100.

An example of pads that should work:

what do you know about the rotors? and what about the rear drums shoes and wheel cylinders?

I'm not sure exactly what you are asking, but...

Rotors from 1990's 70 series to match, etc. Use your VIN at Partsouq to check parts diagrams and get part numbers, then toyodiy.com and should be able to cross reference to see what commonly available US spec truck matches with a given PN.

Example for rear wheel cylinder for drum brakes from advics PN is 47550-60120 put that in ToyoDIY and:

Shows used on a T100 or late model 60 series, drop PN at Rockauto (or other) and you find you can get advics rear wheel drum cylinders for $22.79 ea or pony up for the same thing from a toyota dealer for $60.

There are a lot of ADVICS parts available on RockAuto, just have to hunt around. I'm not 100% sure as I haven't checked, but I think the late 60 series rear drums and shoes are the same for 1990 era 70 series. When in doubt, just order from @cruiseroutfit they'll get you sorted with the correct part at a fair price, without you spending hours chasing PNs in parts diagrams.

^^ This, Kurt and team @cruiseroutfit have been a great resource during my part searches and subsequent purchases from them as many numbers get superseded etc. which makes things a challenge. For brake pads, I like to stay with Toyota factory compounds as they seem to spec really good ones for these trucks that are easy on rotors and provide good modulation on the pedal in all sorts of conditions.

Drums and shoes for my 88 BJ74 are the same as 60 series here in USA. Walked into a NAPA and bought them.

Just a word of caution on Napa parts, specifically their rear brake pistons. I purchased a set two years back and had one blow its seal in 9 months and piss brake fluid all over the inside of the drum, subsequently ruining the brake shoes. Ended up replacing both, along with the shoes with OEM parts from Cruiser Outfitters. OEM brake shoes fit much better and now I have the peace of mind that the pistons will last a while too.

I only did pads/shoes. Any other parts are OEM for me.
