I am trying to get back to the Aisan for my 77' 2F and want to know if an air cleaner assembly from an earlier F engine will fit?

Do you have one from an earlier F engine? I have one that I got free from DBenke in MT Pleasant that I'll pass along to you if you can use it...Not sure what you would need for the '77 though...

Hey I found a picture:

No, the F air cleaner is very different.
If you want a bolt on fit, use a 75-78 air cleaner assembly.

X2 the F one uses a band type clamp to hold it on the carb air horn
The 2F uses a stud and wing nut to hold it on

I think the air horn (correct term?) is a different shape so the F air cleaner will not "bite/ hold" on to the 2F carb

You are correct, Sir!

Not sure if it will work or not but the 69 two barrel carb used a stud and not a clamp. If it's the same size opening not sure. I also know that other markets around the world that didn't all the emissions had the earlier style air cleaner on the 2Fs.

The 69 intake manifold moves the carb a couple centimeters closer to the cylinder head, so it is unlikely that the 69 aircleaner would hit right on the 2F carb & intake. The 69 carb is also much shorter than the 77 carb, so things might not line up vertically either.

Although this is purely conjecture on my part, never tried it.

Will an '84 aircleaner work as a replacement for the '77 aircleaner?

I'm using an '85 aircleaner on an engine which has a '77 carb, '77 head, and '85 intake. So the only difference between my engine and BBQ's is the intake. Will that make a difference?

also, IIRC to mount an early air cleaner, the bracket is held by 2 head bolts, so you have to undo the 2 front head bolts, on the DSt

Godwin, there's a little more to it in your case.
For everything to fit up correctly, the big 81-87 air cleaner, short 81-87 valve cover and short 81-87 carb must be used. Manifolds are the same height.

The 85 aircleaner will not bolt to the 77 VC, and it may cover the oil fill hole.

I am using the 81-87 VC.

So a '77 carb is taller than an 81-87 carb, yet I am using a '77 carb with the 81-87 air cleaner, etc. and it's bolting up ok.

Any difference in height across years with the insulator between the carb and manifold?

Yes, there is a difference in the height of the carb. The 80-earlier carb uses an insulator block between throttle body and main casting, that is 3/4" thick.
The 81-later carbs reduced that insulator to 1/4", and lowered the valve cover & lowered the air cleaner.

To my eyes it does not bolt up OK. The air cleaner lid ends up running uphill from the air cleaner to the carb, so it doesn't seat on the gasket shoulder of the carb squarely. It kinda fits, but not really.

Here's a couple of pics of my setup. First pic is with everything snugged down. For the second one I loosened all the clamps and wing nuts and gave things a shake. The AC lid still looks level to me. What I don't remember is whether I used the '77 or '85 insulator and that could be why the AC lid sits level.

At this point it really doesn't matter because this setup has been working for me.

My original question was for the benefit of BBQ Boy as he needs an air cleaner and I have an extra but it's from a later 2F.

Hey Godwin,
Thanks for your help. I ordered a air cleaner today for $25.
Thanks again

I like the old style air cleaner over the newer 2f style. Either of these problems seem pretty easy to over come. Inlarge the hole the the barket that mounts to the head would take care of a few centimeters and move the air cleaner up on that same braket would take care of the height. The reason I'm looking into it is I have a 78 2F in great shape I plan on installing with a 69 air cleaner I have. If the carb opening size is different than it would be a different story. One of these days I will check it out. But thanks for the heads up. Plus having to unbolt two head bolts to mount the bracket is another concern which has already been mentioned.

You are right, it all looks like it lines up perfect.

So apparently something is dropping the 77 carb enough that it is the same height as the shorter 81 carb. :hhmm:

Really old thread but can’t find much else, I need a factory air cleaner, the catch is, I have a 1970 fj40, a 1976 2f engine, i recently installed a troll hole carb, and bought a 2f air cleaner housing, but it won’t fit with the way the throttle cable runs to the carb, the place I bought it from said they would swap my housing, what year housing will work? I have city racers card to housing spaced already too.
Thanks
Joe.

You should post some pics of what you have and how it doesn't fit. Maybe you can look at SOR.com, looks like only 2 real models
