First Issue....here we go! (1 Viewer)

If it feels like thump when you hear it, it is most likely the rear driveshaft slip yoke binding.

Try going 10-15 MPH and stop very hard and come to a standstill. Then take off slowly adn see if it still does the same thing. The current 4Runner adn Lexus GX seem to have this issue as well.

Normally it goes away after you lube the yoke and do a few more miles. On the GX they issued a TSB that required replacement of the rear driveshaft and rear axle control arms. Toyota as usual did nothing and told dealers to deaf and dumb.

I woudl say have the dealer lube the yoke or just do it yourself. Then give it a workout by going over some bumpy stuff. Make sure not to overfill the yoke with grease, rather give it 3-4 pumps, then go test it out over bumpy stuff. If it is still there after a week just repeat. It should get less and then disappear, but keep it lubed at least every 10K miles and it would be fine.

In the mean time you might want to take it to the dealer as well, as some Tundras had transmission issues. Good to get things on record.

Anyway just my 2c.

If I stop quickly I hear it as I am just about to stop. There is no rhyme or reason to when it happens when accelerating.

It is when I start to move.
Now that I am paying more attention it happens almost everytime I stop.

Off to the dealership on Monday!

I will make a list of things I think it is, which is just a few.

Just curious, will you get a svc loaner while it's in the chop ? If you know,,, You should for what you paid for the sucker !! It might vary from dealer to dealer. I guess if you don't get one then there's another feather in the Lexus cap...

Happy Thanksgiving !!!

For warranty issues Toyota should provide a loaner, the dealers in my area always do. For regular service, they don't.

I am not sure of the local toyota dealership policies, but I have the Gold warrenty package which gives me $35 rent a car if needed. So that would get me another basic SUV at enterprise rent a car if needed.

Well here we go...the first service.

When I got there they were PACKED! I was mixed in between tercel's, camry's, and scions. I was towering over all of them in my LC....it felt good :)

The min I drove up, a service person was right there waiting to help me.

I told him I had an appt and gave him my name.

He checked everything and asked me what the issue was.

I said this:

"Well I have a clunk or knock happening when I start driving and when I come to a stop. As you know, LandCruisers are know to have a drivetrain lubing issue. "

He said:

"Yeah I know, So you have had other LC's then?"

"I have some very good friends that have had similar issue for years" (umm btw if Toyota calls, YOU ALL are my close friends :)

I continued:

"So from past experiance I really think all that needs to be done is to re-grease the drive train and then just look around to make sure there is nothing else that can be causing it"

"You seem to know your truck well"

"Like I said, I have several good friends that have them, and I like to know what I am driving"

"Well we should be able to get it on the lift in about 2 hours and go from there"

"Ummm I had an appt, shouldn't that give me priority over walk-ins?"

"It should...but we are overbooked, as you can tell"

"Does me purchasing a $70,000 truck which happens to be the most expeinsive truck Toyota sell, mean anything?" (with a smile and a chuckle)

"Let me see what I can do"

"Thanks alot!"

Well I thought it would be a few hours anyway, so I was not that worried, I was just trying to play every advantage I could.

An 1 hour and 15 min later....

"Mr. *****" please report to the service area please"

Oh shi*t...something else is wrong!

I come out and there is my LC sitting there, all nice and washed!

The service guy comes over:

"Well we agree with you sir...paying that much for a Toyota should get you priority service here! The tech checked everything out....lubed up the drive train and everything is good to go!"

I said:

"Wow...that is great....but before I sign everything, let me drive it around the lot and see if everything is good"

So I drove it around and ALL KNOCKING is gone!

When I brought it back, I said everything was great!

"Well sir, it is nice to have someone in here who seems to know their truck as well or better then we do ! Makes things alot easier"

I thanked them and drive away. All the issues are gone and hopefully will stay that way!

All I can say is THANKS Ih8MUD users!!! You helped me figure out the problem...which saved me alot of time and trouble!

I don't know if every service will be that way...but I will take it one trip at a time!

hey glad to hear they took car eof you but I'm surprised about the fix ok he is my history with an old grnd cher that had a bad drive shaft lub will take care of the problem but it will resurface in about 1 to 15k miles Now with the gx they replaced the drive shafts but many were on back order back then; anybody here have a gx that had the issue???? how was it fixed??? I never had the clunk in my 100's (99 and and 06). I was told back then it was b/c of the torq from the engine and tranny. I hope it fixed the problem for ya it may just be that the truck is new and built some time ago then shipped and you are in the dry area so that may have factored into the problem. Hey get some more vids up:cheers:

for what they replaced on the GX. I belive the softer the suepsnion the more likely it will bind in the conditions described, as the problem was far less when turning the suepsnion to firm on the GX.

You mean YOU had to DRIVE your car to the dealership?? I would have thought they would have picked it up at your home...Oh, wait......That's Lexus that does THAT !!

So sorry, forget I mentioned it !! ;)

dtt255- sounds like a great dealership experience. I see you're in SoCal- what dealership did you go to for this service?

It was the I-10 Auto Mall toyota in Indio, CA.

Would've only taken 10 minutes to lube in the garage and then this thread could have some tech pics. :D

This should be the first 200 FAQ thread!

Glad to see that the problem is fixed.

I would not have a clue how to do it, otherwise I would have!

How is the "clunk" going? All good I hope, mine is doing the same. It has about 1500miles on it.

I may climb under and put some grease in the tail shafts if it fixes it.

Well it was doing great. It came back but it is not a hard clunk anymore, it is very light. So I am wondering if maybe not enough grease was put on.

Please take some photo's if and when you do yours, I could use the instruction!

Anyone know if Toyota put zerks in both the uni's and the slip joints on the 200 Series shafts? I had heard that they didn't.

Also, be careful how much grease you put in the slip joints. Too much can lead to the destruction of your transfer case. So don't just keep putting grease in until the clunk goes away, that could lead to a bigger, and much more expensive, clunk...

Lame!

The Landcruiser is a SUV and not a TRUCK.

The reason why the issue came back is because you had this attitude about how much you paid for the car and they responed by shutting you up and quickly greasing the problem. VERY likely a part will need to be changed or adjusted which takes time and patience. Your arrogance is why caused your Landcruiser to develop this problem once again, although even just slighly.

Show the service guy some respect and he will get your job done correctly. Otherwise, they will just grease you drivetrain again which will mask the issue which which will just bring you back.

Unfortunetly, your very likely stuck with issue for life and stuck with the quick grease and lube which the dealer will know masks the problem...and to that.....because even though you paid $70k for your Toyota which actually is not the most expensive Toyota truck in history....you got played like a fool by the service guy and to that "I smile and chuckle" because in all honestly, you are no different than a guy who drive a Tercel or Tacoma because after all you drive a Toyota...just like them. .

While I don't necessarily share the animosity displayed above, I do agree that greasing just masks the problem. Especially in a full-time 4WD vehicle, there are lots of parts all moving against one another all the time (crank to transmission to t-case to two driveshafts to two diffs full of gears to four axles shafts to four hubs, etc.). They all wear eventually and a little wear gets compounded since there are so many components in the system. That said, this is just a trait of full-time systems (especially heavy-duty systems like in a Cruiser) and is more annoying than actually a mechanical problem. However, in a new $70K vehicle, it is unacceptable. If it does turn out to be the typical driveline slop, then the only way to truly eliminate it is to replace parts.
