Well s***.... looks like you can install the manifold backwards. No F <--- mark on mine that I can see which means more than likely it is on backwards and I have vacuum leaks at almost every mounting bolt except the two 14mm bolts. Just got done checking with some spray carb cleaner... *SIGH*

Next on the agenda, idle will not lower past 1k unless I pull a bit on the pedal/accelerator linkage. So the question now is for the idle mix screw.. there is a spring the is below it in the hole, am I going to have an issue if I pull it out while still on the manifold? Or would it be better to pull the carb all together and remove? I plan to take a cutter or file and put a good line in it so I can easily get at it with a flathead screwdriver.

If the manifold is leaking, don't waste your time fiddling with the carb right now. The "elephant in the room" is the vacuum leaks.
Get that straightened out, and I bet the idle will be silky smooth.

Unfortunately... I believe the manifold gasket is a crush gasket. The safe thing to do is to replace it with another freaking new one...unless you want to roll the dice and maybe end up taking the manifold off a 3rd time. Ugg

Well we will find out, just sent @beno an email to see if it is a single use item. with the talk about the bolts being different lengths I am going to pull one of the manifold bolts off and compare to the old ones. The olds were still in good condition so I kept them, I have them in parts cleaner as we speak to clean them up some and then will compare on Friday.

I do have a slight leak from that water pump hose so going to have to replace that as well. If the manifold gasket is a one use then I will just order the correct hose, if not then I will grab something locally.

Good plan....
But the 2 old small end bolts for the manifold have been heated and cooled one million times. They have become brittle. Don't reuse them. There is a (real) risk of shearing them off when torquing them back up. Don't ask me why I know this.

But I'll tell you what happens if you shear off one of those bolts...

The head has to come off (again) to extract it if you break the back bolt.... At least mine did. Mama Mia!

Point well taken... as much as I would hate to do it I will use washers to shim out the bolt. Hopefully this is not the case though.

ugh greg i feel your pain buddy!!!! ahhh!

man I just had to do my Harmonic balancer twice, because when i put my timing gear cover on i didnt put RTV on the lower bolts like the FSM calls for, and when it leaked, i thought "huh, maybe ill just have to snug that up a bit.." did that and crushed the gasket. so , HB had to come off, timing cover, etc etc. total pain.

but, hey.. this is how you learn.

with the mani gasket, yes there is an F and an ------> i just recently did mine. Also had my mani milled flat.. which i think you already did?

lastly, i shot mine with a few coats of Copper coat, which stays tacky for a long long time and really helped get a perfect seal.

lastly lastly... agree with Kline... no sense messing with the carb till you have zero vac leaks.

Well just talked to Onur and he thinks it should be fine since I literally just put it on a little over a week ago and don't even have 100 miles on it. So looks like I will be digging in deep this weekend.

Other dumb question.... Grommet for the hood prop rod, I thought you could buy that somewhere but cannot find, only the catch clip.

Anyone know where to get one or can I just get a standard grommet from somewhere like lowes/Home Depot?

That little rubber grommet that holds the base of the hood rod is still available from Toyota.

Ok pic to verify that accelerator linkage looks right. Definitely seems a bit sticky, gonna grab some spray lube tomorrow when I grab new pipe to pump hose from LAPS.

Also, picked up a cheap vacuum gauge for mounting in the cab last night. I have seen a few different recommendations on location and seems like most go from here. Can I "T" this red line and will that produce enough vacuum for it?

That's THE spot to tap a line with a tee for your vacuum gauge. That's where I tapped in. Plenty of vacuum.
If you haven't driven with a vacuum gauge in the cab before its kind of fun (and distracting). After a few months you'll finally realize that the lighter you push on the pedal, the higher the vacuum will be. :)

But higher vacuum during driving doesn't necessarily equate to better mpg, as pumping losses can negate lighter throttle...especially in non EGR equipped engines.

After a few months of watching the needle dance around on the gauge while driving, I came to the conclusion that a vacuum gauge in the cab is more of a distraction than a useful tool. Just another thing to keep my eyes off the road, even if for a second. I removed it from the cab a few years ago and just keep it handy for troubleshooting.

But now I kinda miss it and might put it back in the cab...:)

I need to do both those vacuum gauge and rubber grommet! Your thread has answered like half my questions I think but don't ask haha

Yeah it will mainly be a diagnostic tool and I am sure that sometime son I wil take it out but I am an analyst so I like to know what is going on. Will add a temp gauge too

Greg, if you think the accelerator linkage is sticking, you're better off taking it apart, giving it a good cleaning with brake cleaner, and putting it back together dry. It came from the factory dry. I've tried it both ways (lubed with lithium grease vs clean and dry) and dry works better.

Taking it apart is easy (esp compared to pulling the head) - if you pull the 2 bobby pins and unhook the spring (78103A) to the throttle shaft, you can then pull the whole linkage out in pretty much one piece. There are also a couple of ball joints on the rods (78103, 78104) that are press-fit and can be pried off by hand. Take a pic of the assembly and then take it apart and clean.

This is all fresh in my head because I have pulled and re-installed my linkage many times recently. The unfortunate loose end is that all the cleaning and screwing around has not permanently solved my sticking problem. However, you may have better luck as each of these beasts is a little different. Here's to hoping so...

Thankd @DFXR for the pic... I did assemble dry after the parts had sat in the cleaner for a day. I may pull apart today while I work on replacing one of the hoses and let them sit in the cleaner again.

ok so dumb question.... I ended up removing the alternator to get to that damn short, fat pipe from the water pump to the hard line that goes to the lower rad hose and then has a small break off for the engine. Replace that small break off as well.

Just started her up and seems to be no leaks but temp gauge instantly went to the red line within a few minutes of idling. I am thinking that is because there was missing coolant in the system and since I did not empty the radiator or anything that the hoses that were replaced were kinda in the middle of the system which means that I probably have some air bubbles.

So question is, this should settle to normal operating temp after a short while right? I am letting everything cool now after somewhat getting the system to cycle. I will give it like 30 minutes and then start her up to top the system off again. I already have poured about a gallon in which is about what I equate was lost when I pulled those two hoses.

Yeah, just a air pocket somewhere. I think if you burp it as usual (with radiator cap off for a while) it'll settle down.

@Output Shaft I knew I could count on you!!! Much appreciated for all your help and if we are ever able to meet in person I owe you a few beers.

Hey Greg, I enjoy providing mostly incorrect, misleading, and downright wrong information on as many threads on mud as possible. :)

Anyway, I KNEW how you were feeling when the temp gauge spiked to red. I could hear your heart rate rising. I knew exactly what was going through your mind when you walked over to the cab and saw that godam needle climbing up into the red. WTF?

Thanks for the kind words,

Fred
