ah ok..... Yeah the vacuum lines were replaced shortly after I bought the truck three years ago when I did the desmog.

Ah ok I'm only like 3 pages into your thread but it's a great looking truck from the start looking forward to seeing the evolution.

How difficult was the de smog?

Desmog isn't too bad, just take your time and ensure that you have everything identified beforehand. Other than that a nice sharp x-acto knife will save some possibly brittle plastic parts. I will warn you that there is a lot of banter in the build thread but hopefully some good info for you.

Don't have the head off yet but that to me doesn't look right.

And all my ports are pretty charred is that normal?

Yes, that's from the EGR before you desmogged.

Love it makes me wanna go outside and pull the head off mine!

Nice dude!!! solid work.

can you tell where she blew?

Unfortunately I cannot find anywhere that the headgasket actually blew other than the frayed edges under the exhaust manifold. Did find that the water pump was not original and whomever replaced it used blue RTV so I am wondering if the overheating was more of that then the head gasket..

The back two head bolts (closest to firewall and next to it the two that hold the back hook) were so tight in there that my buddies impact wasnt even able to break them loose. Took a swivel head with an extension and a 25" breaker bar and LOTS of cursing to break them both loose. Can tell that the engine got real hot but cannot see anywhere on the gasket that it actually blew between cylinders or anything.

so I am wondering if the overheating was more of that then the head gasket..

Tell the machine shop to rule out a cracked head.

The reason those head bolts were frozen was because they had never been retorqued. Retorquing the head bolts every year (valve check) will prevent that from happening in the future.

When you say retorquing is it just loosening them alittle then tightening back down to factory spec?

Interesting...
Your new HG coolant holes in the back are different than mine were. I got my new Toyota HG 5 months ago.

In fact, the first one that was shipped to me was damaged during shipping (lame packaging caused it to bend) and I had to return it. It's replacement was identical to the one I sent back.

Since your new HG coolant holes look identical to your 25 year old HG holes... I'm wondering if you got NOS.

My new OEM HG photo attached.

In fact, now that I look closer at your new gasket.... The coolant holes throughout the entire gasket are in different places.

Your new HG looks nothing like mine.

Take a look at your old HG.

Almost all the coolant holes on the gasket are blocked.

No wonder it was overheating.

That's caused from over extended coolant drain intervals and/or the wrong type of coolant in the past (dex-cool) before you owned the car.
