Hello everyone,

Just wanting a little help, as im not much of a mechanic. Im fixing up a 78FJ40, currently im working on the cooling system, i want to remove the fan that is connected to the water pump, but leave the water pump there, i would like to do this to run electric puller fans, but if i pull the fan off its not going to kill the pump or anything is it??

and can any body see any problems if i fab up a shroud with tin??, cheap and easy..

thanks for you help, keep on trucking:doh:

Nope.. it wont cause any problems... The one thing you want to keep in mind is that if you are going to be running a lot of accessories (stereo, amp, off road lights) your stock alt. only puts out in the area of 45 amps if I remember right. That could cause your fan(s) to run slow not allowing them to cool properly.. but, as far as removing your stock fan causing any damage to the water pump, nope it wont hurt anything.

Cool thanks for that, good point about the Alternator, especially with using the winch, might have to upgrade the alternator while im playing!! thanks for the help!!

An upgraded alt will not help when using a winch except to reduce recovery time on the battery. Unless you can find an alt that puts out over 200 amps, which is fairly typical draw for a winch with a 3000# load. The GM alt typicaly used to replace or upgrade from the stock 2F 45 amp alt has a 90 amp output IIRC. The 45 amp stock alt will usually have more than enough time between winch uses to fully re-charge the battery. The stock alt will also allow you to retain the stock amp guage, which will not carry 90 amps with out a shunt. Better to spend the money on a battery with a higher cranking amp rating.

Why do you want to replace the mechanical fan?
IMHO an electric fan is just another point of failure. Unless you need to use one I would avoid it. This is based on spending a fair amount of time on the trail waiting for people to fix electric fan problems.

Typicaly people will use an electric fan when they do a SBC conversion and the mechanical fan is located to far back from the radiator to create enough air flow for proper cooling.

Hello,

I am going to put a 650CCA batt in there when she is good to go. maybe two iff them... see how i feel :)
I want to put the electric fans in there for real deep mud and water crossings, i have already had the fan exspolde on me becasue of water!!!, just have to make sure the motors on the elec fan are all sealed up as mush as possible and all connections are sealed, im not to worried about them dying on the trail, might just take the old mech, fan a long just in case :) im using fans as the truck is for trails only. ;)

My understanding about CCA with winches is 900CCA. Can't remember where I read that, but seems resesonable to me. 650CCA does not seem enough for a winch.

Howdy

650 CCA is the minnimum recommended batt for a warn XD9000, which is the one i have, but hay, more power the better.;)
ill get two, put them together and have 1300CCA.... might have to get the new alternation after all ;p

Makes sense, I've heard of a couple of guys who grenaded mechanicle fans in water crossings. It's kind of a hassel but you can always just loosen the fan up before a crossing and re-tighten it after.
I would still keep the factory alt unless you plan on a lot of rock lights, refer, etc.
Think about how a winch is used, usually for a relativly short period with a long recovery time before you use it again. Dual batteries would be a better use of $$$.

The other reason for going the electric fans is, i have brought a radiator that is few inchs bigger than stock, so the little mech fan looks kind of sad now., thinking the electric ones will be able to suck more air through at lower speeds. im going to put two 12" fans side by side. and hook them up so i can hace them run as normal, turn them off, or chuck them in reverse.... ;p

I thought a mechanical fan would hold up with water. I can stop my fan with a 20oz plactic bottle with it at op temp. If you run bolts through your fan clutch I can see them grenading. I have no experiance on this so someone please correct me if i'm wrong. I would think the disadvantage would be on the mechinacal fan the extra splashing of water on your disributor.

I'm thinking of guys who ran the Flex Fans w/o a clutch.

, or chuck them in reverse....

Why?

Are you in Poland?

:) Nope not in Poland... just doing it cause i can, might be able to blow small dapree out of the radiator... or just help me reverse. as far as i know, my fan does not have a clutch, it just bolts right into the pump.

it's pretty easy to post a picture as long it is not to big.

Go to advance mode and click on the paper clip, then upload from you computer. It will tell you if it is to big. Then click on the paper clip again to attach it.

That's an interesting anti-theft device. Are you trying to keep someone from stealing your house?

You can never be to carefull, na photos were taken at the PO house. i was hoping to get the anti theft device thrown in with the truck, but must have chained his house to something else.
