Hi Folks,

I'm new to the forum and have been lurking and searching the archives for the past few weeks. There is a wealth of information up here! Thanks for sharing this.

I have a 1993 FZJ80 with cloth interior, lockers and a block heater. It came from Montana and I've been slowly performing all of the necessary services to bring it into tiptop shape. (I'm from Atlanta, GA) It has 143k miles on it and runs well.

My first question is about a faint squeal I hear after I shift the transmission into reverse. It sounds similar to the intermittent squeal you'd hear from wheel bearings but much fainter. Has anyone experienced this same noise in reverse? Once I shift out of reverse, the noise goes away. It's sort of a pulsing squeal that is steady whether the car is stationary or moving backwards. ( it is very faint/quiet)

I had the transmission serviced at the Toyota dealership and it didn't make a difference. I also added some Lubegard red label to see if it would loosen things up a little to no avail.

Any advice on what it might be? I'm not ready to take it to a transmission place since I know what their suggestion will be... >:(

Thanks again for the great information on the site! I searched for this problem but didn't find anything.

I've got the same sound and it only started after I changed the fluid out in my tranny. It's gotta be the reverse clutch pack.

I'm not worried about it because it's been doing it for about 80K miles now and hasn't seemed to change the way it works at all. It's just a sound that I've learned to ignore.

ToothFairy,

That's just the answer I was hoping for! I can live with squeaks and rattles... I just wanted to make sure I wasn't close to a major tranny overhaul.

I see you have the same truck. Have you also noticed an occasional problem on cold mornings in the winter where you shift it into Drive for the first time and it doesn't engage? I have this problem sometimes only on cold mornings. If I turn it off, crank it and try it again, it works fine. I'm thinking it's some solenoid sticking when it's cold. I have all of the Toyota FSMs including the A442F Tranny FSM so I may do some studying before next winter. If it's a solenoid that is accessible outside of the tranny, I might try removing it and cleaning it.

Thanks again for the response!

Powell,

I think Cdan has changed/serviced a solenoid pack on his A442F and it was accessed very easily via removing the oil pan. So you'd be able to clean your filter at the same time (not sure if this was part of the recent dealer service?). Might be the PO let things get very dirty and after awhile the fresh fluid and its additives will slowly dissolve the grundge that's causing it. Don't flush it, whatever you do. Instant banishment from the list - heh.

Curious about the "Shogun" with dual bouncies. Is this Powell from the Montero list??

If you ever need a hand wrenching let me know. Will work for beer.

I live in Atlanta too (Woodstock).

Hi Doug,

I thought that was you when I was reading the site. Yes, it's "pmontero" from the Montero site. Thanks for the tips on the solenoid pack replacement... I may try that if it gets worse. Unfortunately, they did flush it but both problems were occuring before the flush. (I know better now! They talked me into it when I asked them to service it and drop the pan and clean/change filter, etc.) I read through the A442F FSM the other night and it looks like everything is internal except for the linkage and the inhibitor switch.

Thanks for your help with picking this Land Cruiser... I love it!

Take care,

Powell

Thanks Dan! What color is your rig? I've seen an FJ80 once or twice with lift and Slee bumper and I'm wondering if that was you. (the one I saw was white) Let me know if you need help wrenching as well... I'm even cheaper since I don't drink beer anymore! :D Dr. Pepper for me...

Do you want to help with the PHH some time? I just ordered the Toyota hose and clamps yesterday and I'm looking for a mechanic with a small pair of hands and extremely long arms with a couple of extra joints in them. ;)

Powell

That was Madison Wilhelm in the white 80. He moved here from Colorado and recently sold his rig.

Mine is grey and charcoal two tone with a lift and slee front.

I am working on my birfs tonight and have family for next weekend.

I will PM you with my cell...would be happy to help with the PHH. I have a 3FE so I don't have the issue, and I am 6'4" and 260 so I doubt I have the right size hands/arms.

While acknowledging that yours appears to have lasted 143k mikes, considering the difficulty in replacing the PHH, I would suggest upgrading the hose and the clamps accordingly. The material cost is not much of a factor compared to the labor cost, personal or otherwise.

Hi,

I'll go back and re-read some of the threads on the PHH. There seems to be controversy over whether to go with the silicone hose or stock with the silicone more prone to leaking without special spring-loaded clamps.

Thanks,

Powell

Hey Powell, welcome to the list! For the rest of you, he and I were both on a Montero board when a '99 full size Montero/Pajero shared the garage with the 80 for 4 years. He and I shared a few emails about the 80 Series and such and here he is - another convert.

Seems to me I've heard that faint squeal in other 80s before. Sounds like a faint (very) high pitched belt squeal type sound when in reverse, right? If that's the sound then it's likely a characteristic of the tranny - perhaps a machined area that cavitates a bit when the flow goes through it due to a bit of accumulation, or something. See if the fresh fluid additive package doesn't slowly clean that up, before you get too intimate with the A442F. It's pretty robust.

An alternative to silicone hose and the stock hose is Gates Green Stripe hose. This hose quite a bit thicker than the stock hose, and physically more durable than silicone hose. As it is stiffer than both the silicone hose and the stock hose, it is likely more difficult to install, unless you remove and reinstall the vertical metal heater pipe as part of the replacement process, which is what I did.

Thanks folks for helping with both questions. I may run by Carquest this afternoon and buy a section of the Gates Green stripe to compare. Maybe a little hose grease inside will help slip it on with only removing one of the bolts from the heater pipe.

Doug, it's good to hear from you again! I've actually become a TLC family now. My first was a '98 100 series with rear locker. I got a really good deal on it and bought it when I really wanted an 80. I loved the 100 but it was too nice for me. I was rubbing down the leather once a week with Lexol and wouldn't let the kids wear shoes or eat in the car.

I ended up selling it. My father has a 2001 LX470 and loved it so much he bought my '98 for my mother. I found my current FZJ80 with cloth interior and lockers about a year ago after searching for several months all over the US for a '93-94 with lockers and cloth interior. (rare beast) I had just about given up when I noticed an 80 with a For Sale sign in the window two blocks from my house! It had lockers, cloth interior and a block heater special ordered from a dealer in Bozeman, MT. The original owner gave it to his daughter when she moved to Atlanta. My neighbor bought it in 2000 from her and used it to haul artwork to/from his art gallery.

Now she has come home to be appreciated and used for what she was built for! The 80 fits my lifestyle better and I don't mind scratching her on the trail!

before I would pull a soliniod I would disconnect and reconnect the wiring harness plugs. There might be some corrision that is causing the slight delay in the electricy activating the soliniod. not so easy as the connections are above the starter. later robbie

[/quote]... mental note to self, check this connector when doing starter contacts and plunger.... as they still sit on the garage workbench

Thanks Robbie. I haven't done the starter contacts yet so I'll make sure to disconnect all of the tranny connectors, clean them, put a little dielectric grease on the pins and reconnect them while I have the starter out.

Small world, I always meant to ask you if you were the same Doug from the 4x4wire montero board! Several years ago I had a 90 Montero V6 and was on the board for ~9 months. I actually liked the Montero almost as much as the Landcruiser... until I got an intermitent electrical gremlin that I could not track down, it would shut down with no warning in the middle of the road a couple times a day  Finally had to get rid of it, my only real failure with a vehicle so far, bummer, the valves were even good on it >:( Now I'm pissed, remmbering how it beat me. Couldn't sell it to anyone in good conscience, so had to trade it in at a dealer. Well now I know your the same Doug, like I said small world. :D

Hi it's Rodney here from Wholesale Automatics. I have read all of your replies here and just thought I would jump in. None of the solenoids run reverse, it is a totally hydraulic system for reverse. It sound like it could be a valve buzz. I would replace the oil with synthetic oil and replace the filter just in case it wasn't done. A small amount of restriction can make the pump buzz as it struggles for oil flow. Should do in forward gears but who knows. Does it change if the car is hot or cold? Louder? Quieter?
Regards
Rodney
