Factory Navigation: Any Alternatives in Sight?

I looked at two here in Cali before getting mine that we're none nav, neither came from Hawaii.
I might try swapping out the whole unit since my nav doesn't work and I'd love an updated head unit. I wonder if I'll have to replace all the speakers and the amp since it's the ML set.

While dated and not visually appealing, the OE nav head works fine and the Mark Levinson isn't bad even with paper drivers. Bluetooth input and ram windshield mount and you've got current nav and wide ranging audio selections. Not worth a Frankenstein truck to fix. Rob made a valiant effort a few years back. If there was a feasible work-around he would have found it. Enjoy it for what it is.

Re OE swaps: nav was a factory option not a dealer option. Seems like there was discussion a while back that it was more involved than just a pnp front end swap (computers and harnesses too?)

A few years ago is a long time when speaking electronics and technology. I agree Rob made a respectable effort looking at those posts. However, with the increased amounts of used vehicles showing up with nav/climate integration and people wanting to change it out, there is a growing market for conversions. There WILL be a solution to this as available texhnology advances and demand grows.

I like your optimism and while that would be fantastic, this is a very small market vehicle and the replacement electronics must interface with closed source and largely undocumented OE body control computer. Not to mention the unique form factor and buttons. It's a tall order to expect the market to find a replacement for our trucks.

Our best hope lies in another talented enthusiast with the right combination of funds, knowledge, and time. And even with that, it's not likely to be commercially viable.

NAV would not be so bad if Toyota used the same Mark Levinson system Lexus used.
How much of this can be cured by going to poly drivers and replacing the OE amp?

Worst case scenario you could disassemble and paint the trim. Virtually no chance of matching the buttons, but a slightly contrasting color would work.

I actually did have an interior specialist paint that peice of trim. The color matches but it's just not the same texture. Keeping my eye out for a broken unit... one will pop up someday.

Wierd! I had just read this post and thought "if I had a problem with my head unit I would get it fixed". But I don't. Then as I was trolling my local craigs for parts I ran across this ad.

Sounds like this guy knows a lot about these units. If someone really wants to look into converting out this would be a guy to consult. I am sure he has useful info.

I sent an email to Darryl Geller per the craiglist add and I'll let you know his response. I need a screen and dvd repair for my 2002 Landcruiser. I had also contacted http://www.carradio.com/ and here's their response:

"We can repair the no read dvd problem in the Navigation ECU Drive for a cost of $250. This covers the problems with the bad motor.

The Navigation screen problem sounds like a bad touch screen that only comes with the complete LCD assembly and cost $600 to repair.

We can turn this repair around in one week unless parts need to be ordered.
This also includes a 12 month, hassle free warranty on the entire unit not just the parts changed"

I have just started looking into this myself. It's the only thing stopping me from upgrading from my 99.
Has anyone looked at naviav.com? I just started chatting with them.
They make a unit that replaces just the screen and keeps the heater controls. Has a hideaway unit of some sort cd, nav, DVD, Bluetooth.
China manufacturer of unknown quality but not many other options. I'd prefer a kenwood unit but this may be worth a try.

ogsuv,
Keep us posted. That might be the ticket. I have an 05 and still need to do the touch screen repair. Just haven't had time to pull out the MFD and do the tiny solder joint repair.

Hey if it works it's better than what we are stuck with now...please keep us updated..

I will be glad to but might be a few months. I'm shopping for an 03+ now and vowed not to buy another rust belt truck (I am in WI). Traveling to vegas and Texas over the summer and hoping to get lucky.
Maybe someone else will be daring and test the waters.
