I got a line on a 87 62 front axle for $500 hub to hub. The seller says it has a factory locker in it.

My question to you guys is, is worth it? any known downsides? cable or electric?

I know nothing about the 60-62 axles, just that they are 3in wider then what's under my 40?

Thanks
Jason

It sounds like you're being played. I'm pretty damn sure that the FJ62 didn't come into production until the '88 model year (for any area of the world), and I know only non-US models had the option of a factory locker. If factory, it would be cable, which from my understanding, is a damn good locker. If he's legit and it's a non-US axle with a locker, you'll have to run a cable to somewhere in the cab in order to actuate it. I don't imagine it'd be too hard, if you know a bit about cable rigging.

some jap imports i have seen have been labled as 62's regardless of year (one particular was a 83 model)

sounds like a good deal, maybe there is something wrong with it?

or maybe dreams do come true.

well it has 4.11's in it, so im pretty sure that 87 is the born on date.

stay away as spoke of before.even if its fj62 it has 411 as you spoke of already.unless you changed it your 60 has 370 not for 411.so your gearset would not match.las far as any overseas options i could not help you.i only know what was shipped to the states:D

I like the factory cable lockers myself. It sounds like a good deal to me..

If it dose'nt have a factory locker, I think it still would be a good deal for a 62 front axle. I just want to make sure the lockers not junk.

It could be an LSD (Limited slip diff). These were available in NA, but AFAIK were dealer installed. Cable locker would be cool...

Jason, were you at the TB jambo? I notiecd your E-mail..

If it is a limited slip i would pass..

cable locker I would go for it, I'll send you a 3.70 gearset to match your 60's gearing if that is a deal killer...

Cable lockers are super cool..

I want one for Bob, but have not found a good enough deal to replace the lockright I currently have...

no not the tin benders, Chris M. is a good budy of mine. He must of been dropping my name again  I hate it when he does that

anyways, I'll be keeping the 4:11s. they go with rear end. and this is going in a 7640. I'm just trying to kill a couple birds with one stone.

thanks for the info guys:beer:

Now to find out what this guy really has.

Figure it out, and come on out.

Be happy to share a beer with ya..

Mainly the 61 series diesel had the lockers from 85 on in some countries
Make sure all the cable and fittings are attached .Ive heard it really difficult making your own.
If thy are not included this maybe why they are so cheap.
Cables on their own are almost non existant.
Below is a 70 series cables but identical to a 60 except for the length and they are not interchangeable from a practicle point of view.

If it has 4.11 gears, a full floater, and a locker, it's not US spec. It MUST be a full floater and have a actuator crank on the diff. Get the ID number off the axle, and post it here...

It could easily be from a Canadian or Latin American truck, or JDM import part. Just go look at it and see what it is - get pictures. If it is as represented, I for one would buy it in a heartbeat.

The cable locker has to be full floater?

All OEM lockers are similar mechanisms, and require FF axles. The principal difference between the cable locker and the elec. locker is the method of activation.

I am assuming that the reason you cannot use a cable locker in a SF application is because there is no provision for C clips, correct??

Rear 80 series Electric lockers are all full floaters then?
Is that a correct statement?

Front End = full floater!! You can not acheive articulation with a Semi Floating set up.

Articulation???

I never realized that the flex you get out of springs is dependant on wether a axle is a full floater or a semi floater :flipoff2:
