I finally have some time to work on my 1970 fj40. I am replacing the freeze plug closes to the fire wall.there are only two of them on the exhaust side of the engine.I bought a freeze plug kit and the biggest plugs are marked 50mm I am having a hard time trying to hit this thing in.I gave up and removed the steering box and column but that was as far as I got before having to leave to pickup my son from school.is there any tricks to installing these things?? Thanks

Here's my .02 worth. I too have a '70 FJ-40. Ditch the stock/OEM freeze plugs and go with aftermarket expansion plugs. They're available at your local auto parts store. They fit in the hole and you tighten the nut to get them to expand and fill the gap. I've been running them for years with no problems. In case of a hard freeze, they push out just as easily as the stock ones.

Holy deep fried Twinkies
I think you just saved me a whole lot of work. I was contemplating pulling the fender off are the exhaust and intake manifold off.heather one I was looking forward to.I will check out the auto parts store tomorrow.

That is NOT the correct freeze plug. The correct OE is still available from the dealer. It does not have an outer lip.

on my third trip to the auto parts store for the correct size It would be helpful to know what size you used. 47mm to 50mm doesn't cleat the inner lip on the block. so I'm headed back to get the 40mm to 47mm size.

EDIT: Dang! I gotta remember to chedk the dates on these threads. Oh well. I'll leave it.

A few months back I ordered plugs for Toyota Parts Deal and they said there was a stocking delay. Fearing they might become NLA I ordered some from Amayama also. They all came in so their still available.

I made an installation tool with a 1-1/2 x 3/4 pipe bushing and a 3/4” piece of pipe for a handle to smack on. The 1-1/2” threaded part was shortened and sanded down for a nice rounded edge fit into the plug. The hex part of the bushing acts as a stop so you can’t drive it in too far. Worked like a champ.
