I went wheeling in TN this weekend and had a blast! In the course of the trip I got high sided (newb) and my muffler took a hit along with my now wasted gas tank skid plate (pictures will be posted later). My question is, what is the established solution to protect the exhaust? I now have an exhaust leak between the 2 cats on the driver side. I don't know if it was caused by the muffler or hitting the cross pipe, although the cross pipe doesn't show any scratches.

With my FJC, I went with a Dirty Deeds industries Hi-tuck Catback system with BAmuffler. You can park you truck on that muffler, I’ve done it.
I’m thinking about going that route when the time comes to replace the GX’s.
Give Keith a call, good guy and has been building these systems for 4Runners and Tundras so I know he’s built them for the 4.7 for sure. It’s a little spendy but they are custom and will take the abuse.

This was my setup

And installed.

Mine got completely out of hand...but now I have an exhaust that is worth more than my truck! Lol

Wow, Dan, with all of those lobster tails i am sure it was pricey. But I really like how the cross over is up and out of harms way.

JoabMC; those mandrels probably flow well.

I am considering simply cutting the stock muffler out and replacing it with a large, but not tall, muffler and using the stock tubing with an extension to make it fit. I dont know if a chambered or perforated tube type muffler would be best.

^^^ I'd stay away from chambered (to avoid drone).

I put a straight through Magnaflow (2.5" in and out) on mine, cut off the resonator at the rear, and turned it out the side. Sounded great...just loud enough to know it was there, but in no way annoying.

Think it was a 22" long muffler, the part number is in my old build thread. I'll grab it and edit / post it here. EDIT: Part #12586

See here: Builds - '05 GX470 "build"...

This. ^^^ Or the latest offering from FlowMaster, their FX line. Which is basically the same thing.

Everyone I've known with a chambered style has developed an internal rattle of some kind.

Good insight, thanks

Looks like the Flowmaster FX straight trough which is what we need is a round canister. Says moderate to aggressive sound. Anybody try it out yet?

I guess I should have been more clear. I don’t want a round canister type muffler for the GX. Which is what the Flowmaster FX is that fits our vehicle.
