So I did a quick two-night camping trip this weekend. As I was driving along the bumpy roads leading into the campsite a loud banging caused me to hit the brakes. I thought it was a branch or something that got kicked up under the truck. I proceeded a little farther down the road, and as soon as things got bumpy again the noise returned. I climbed under the truck and nothing was there...so I gave the exhaust a kick and sure enough the damn thing is smacking up against the truck (i'm guessing near the cats). I did a search and I think the rubber mounts are deteriorated and/or missing. How many are there? Anyone have this problem? I think I read that there maybe 3 in the 97 LC. I don't have a FSM yet, but I just thought I could get the ball rolling before it arrives.

Cheers.

Also...after the two hour trip on the highway I accumulated what amounts to about 5lbs. of bugs on my wind shield. Is the OEM hood deflector worth anything? I ordered the GTS one, but all it did was give me vibration in my side view mirrors.

I just knocked my exhaust from the rubber mount area you are talking about behind the last cat. So i went to Lowes and got a worm-gear hose clamp, clamped it back down onto the rubber and she's done.

According to the FSM there are 4 support brackets for the exhaust system from front pipes into the cats and from the cats back all the way. 3 of them are after the cats. back on the exhaust and one is right before the O2 sensor.

You might also want to check to make sure that the heat shields aren't loose and hitting the exhaust or the cat. covers might be loose and clanging against your cats.

Best.

njfzk80,
I had this same problem regarding the exhaust. If memory serves me right, there are 3 rubber mounts and if you slide under the truck and look around the Cats you can see them with a little light. I just went by toyota and had them part it for me and ordered a new one. My pipes were hitting my slider, most annyong sound EVER. Have any Q's feel free to ask, but all you need is a little time to get under the rig and take a look, if the truck is cool and you can get a hand on the pipes give them a good shake and you'll find the weak link.

I have the same problem on my heatshield. Although mine is an FJ80, the rubber mount came off the piece that holds the bottome half of the shield on the exhaust, don't know how to get it back together, either glue or idk?

njfzj80 - if one mount snapped - fix it quick. Otherwise you run the risk of the added support required coming from elsewhere in the system and leading to issues. Wang something up for it yourself.

Just Buy a new rubber piece from toyota...it bolts in super quick...don't waste the time with glue and g-d knows what else.

The rubber piece on mine looks connected to another metal piece that holds the bottom heat shield on.

The toyota dealer claims I have to go in person to purchase the part, and only then will they order it. I'll just head to autozone on my way from work and see if I can rig something myself. Thanks for the help.

Cheers.

So I checked the exhaust line and there doesn't seem to be anything directly holding it up near the Cats. There's a mounting bracket in the rear of the truck, near the tail pipe. Behind the rear cat there is a bracket straddling the pipe (but not touching it) that is connnected to another bracket mounted on the frame. The noise I'm hearing is the exhaust banging up against the bracket that is straddling it. Is this the original set up or did I knock something off?

Cheers.

the one just "hanging" is rotted off near the back of the rear cat and is now hanging . If theres enough left you can get it welded back on or just get one of the universal ones from your brain dead run big box auto stores right next to the great looking chrome tips

Jersey...I was away friday through sunday. I just gave your shop a buzz and left a message.

I just wanted to say thanks to jersyfzj80 and his guys over at the shop. They welded the bracket right behind the rear cat. They didn't have much to work with, but it looks like it'll hold... for now anyway. The truck road nice and smooth on the way home.

Cheers.
